How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? The BirdNET research project uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify nearly 3,000 of the most common species of North America and Europe. You can record a file using the internal microphone of your iOS device and see if BirdNET correctly identifies the probable bird species present in your recording. Get to know the birds around you and help us to collect observations by submitting your recordings.
BirdNET is a joint project of the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Chemnitz University of Technology.

not great lol
Tried it with my pet duck and it came up with a heron. With my other duck it was a turkey, a black faced ibis, northern fulmar, and a mallard.
you don’t get those where i am from except the mallard. She is a khaki campbell tho so part mallard i guess.
failed to pick up the actual wild bird chirping in the background.
It’s a nice idea but needs further development
Sometimes you record a bird call and it’s correctly identified, other times not. The birds of your area is also not complete and for both these inaccuracies, there is no possibility to provide further details.
For instance, I am very lucky to live in an area known for it’s summer migration of Nightjars, in the late evening they sound a little like toads. The app has no suggestion and at this point there is no way to report the fact that the birds exist in the area, or in the case of a wild guess, that it is actually a Nightjar.
I think there should be some place for human intervention so that people can identify or confirm bird calls from the locale.
Performs very well
So far this app has been doing a great job at identifying birds. The only thing I can’t figure out is how to clear the current recording and start from scratch. It seems quitting and restarting the app is the only way.
Great app and pretty accurate
Really impressed with this app. I have used it to identifylive and recorded calls and the accuracy is very good.
Sound recordings lost
Very disappointed that the new version release has wiped my sound recordings. They now show 0.0 as duration for recordings.
Didn’t work
Disappointing apo
Good but…
Simple to use, and I’ve found it to be the most reliable. However, it feels like a bit of a 1 way research street. It would be great if the “explore your area” / Select a bird actually allowed you to play back a selection of the audio recordings rather than just take you to Wikipedia. That would help me learn as well as you train your model.
Excellent app
Very impressive app that seems to be very reliable. Highly recommended especially as its available for free. Much better that the paid alternatives. I especially love the spectrogram which is useful for isolating the bird song from the recording.
Can’t get it to work
Appeared to lose recordings. Tried “explore your area” and whilst it accurately placed me in Battersea, London, it also thought golden eagles and hummingbirds were frequently seen here. Not in the Battersea I live in ... 😏
Useless
Couldn’t identify a blackbird at 20 yards thought it was a cuckoo. Deleted.
