Disappointing
It's just a scanned copy of the paper book, without that much reorganization for an App. It's slow and crashes often on either iPad or iPhone XR.
Yes, Birds of Peru is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Not enough reviews to make a reliable assessment. The app needs more user feedback.

Some species don’t have range maps or sound recordings. Other than that, it’s really good!
This is going to be such a big help! Now the book can stay in the backpack most of the time, rather than clutched in one hand awkwardly as you hold your binoculars. But by far the great thing is the sound recordings! So often they clinch the diagnosis.
Now I no longer have to carry the heavy book and it’s very easy to use. However, it will be complete if it had a place where to write down notes where one can store information.
After looking at other reviews I am wondering oh I have the same app! There are not enough illustrations. Every time I want to look up a family the search function I can’t see all the members because the keyboard blocks the bottom of the page. Cancelling the search takes me back to the beginning and I have to scroll through the whole darn list. The life list function does not record date or location. I thought I was supposed to be able to use this and it would share my information with eBird. So now I have to keep a paper list. Only benefit is reduction in weight from not carrying the book.
Sure it's pricey but you get what you pay for. The images are very good and it looks like there are more compared to the book. The main advantage to the app is the calls. It also lets you narrow down the species by 6 regions. There are size, habitat and color filters as well that didn't work great for me but I've never been impressed with these features in other bird guide apps, so par for the course. I'm using it on an iPhone so I can't vouch for how it works on a tablet.
I went to the Inkaterra guide field station in Madre de Dios. This app helped us to identify not only birds we saw but also bird calls we heard. Great app. Would recommend.
The app is based on a popular field guide to Peru and has information on every species you will ever see. Only negative is the images are low resolution.
