Description

ButterSynth is a hybrid 6-oscillator wavetable/FM/sample-based AUV3 and standalone synthesizer with a vast sonic range, from gentle pads to screaming leads and basslines.
Mix any combination of wavetable, FM, sample and other synthesis engines for one truly massive sound.
For the more advanced users, you'll love using ButterSynth's thoughtfully designed interface, incredibly powerful modulation matrix, fully-featured internal FX rack, factory waveform and sample libraries, and almost limitless scope for fun, experimentation and sound design.
For less experienced synth programmers, ButterSynth includes a library of hundreds of ready-to-use presets, sparking your creativity to start making music right away.

Headline features include
- Mix and match any combination of 6 synthesis engines to either emulate your favourite synths of yester-year or build a synth ready for the future.

- Dual-wavetable engines also feature 9 phase modes, wave folding, and deep unison controls modelled on vintage hardware synths.

- Built-in wavetable editor gives you the ability to tweak, morph, and hand-draw your own custom wavetables, with each wavetable supporting up to 256 frames.

- FM engine offers 4 operators with a selection of 12 modulation paths. Each operator can be loaded with any waveform from the factory or user library, and can also self-modulate via the feedback dial.

- Sample and Granulator engines both let you load samples (either imported or from the factory library) and control precisely how they are chopped, triggered and layered. Both also feature the same powerful unison modes available in the WT engine.

- Highly configurable 32-slot modulation matrix featuring precise mix/max ranges, self-modulation (via the amount target), plus configurable response curves and layer modes. Simply long-tap any parameter to set it as a Mod destination!

- Full suite of versatile control sources which includes: 4x MSEG-style looping curve envelopes, 4x LFOs, 4x step sequencers, X/Y pad with motion recording, 8x Macro dials and a powerful arpeggiator inspired by Kirnu Interactive’s Cream.

- The EFX rack lets you build your own insert effects chain using any combination of the 16 built-in FX modules. Modules available at launch include delay, reverb, distortion, chorus, OTT compression etc. Note - FX parameters can also be targeted by the mod matrix, unlocking the possibility to program ‘per voice’ modulated effects.

- All presets, wavetables, samples and other settings are stored in the Files app, making bulk import/export, backup and community sharing quick and easy.

- All of this is housed in an irresistibly designed 4-tab UI that makes synth programming quick and fun.

Excellent and hypertext pdf manual makes it a cut above.

ButterSynth is not the absolutely most tweakable out there in iOS/iPadOS, nor the least. In practice it’s a top-tier instrument though. At the bottom end of customisable I suppose there are soundfont players with a dab of FX or the ability to layer (there are great ones for ipad and iphone), up top there are synths ported from ‘big boy’ DAWs maybe. It’s really good, coming with top-notch sound banks/patches, huge numbers of them. I downloaded one set from a third-party vendor (Jakob), and with his instructions it was integrated into Buttersynth in minutes. I feel I have to mention my findings from considerable testing with an iPad Pro 2 (before getting my iPad Pro M1 used, with ‘everything on’): short version, do not try to make any involved music on iOS devices unless you have at least 55Gb free SSD space. I began making sure 70Gb was my free SSD space in the end. I found 55Gb is the absolute minimum before several major issues occur like, ‘forgetting’ of the Audio Unit’s sound patch setting after you close the DAW and re-open it, spurious numerous faults, and the big one in GarageBand: GARAGEBAND WILL AUTOMATICALLY DEGRADE SOUND QUALITY IF YOUR DEVICE’S RESOURCES ARE STRETCHED. This includes audio being reduced to as little as 11kHz (compared to what you might believe is set to 44.1kHz!), and I suspect that some feedback to developers to the effect that their Audio Unit version sound patches are not the same as the standalone, could be exactly this deliberate deterioration by their DAW, or simply a by-product of low resources. If we compare this with PCs, their main OS literally is stated to need 200Gb completely free unused space on HDD or SSD to work with, so there ought not to be a surprise, we just haven’t outright been told - well, as an ex-IT man I am doing that now, to try and help other music creators the best way I can. Once you drop below 55Gb free SSD, fix that first, get it up to 70Gb free space to ensure AUv3 plugins can do their job, and the DAW give its best too. Apple had a USP using only SSD, but for taxing audio work, it’s a necessity now in my humble view. To round that aspect off, if you have iCloud as I do, don’t think you can ‘move’ stuff over as if it were a ‘Drive D’ or something, you cannot. Bad things happen. Either upgrade your device and/or get a backup drive for this. It’s not the Audio Unit Developer’s fault that there are technical constraints on user devices. This information was hard-fought for, so please save yourself a

Not great on smaller screens…

Zenhabit on

Although this synth seems great in terms of functionality, it’s not very usable on smaller screen phones and doesn’t resize appropriately on the iPhone 8 or SE, hopefully will be fixed going forward as it has a lot of promise.

Missing tunings

Daley38 on

Nice synth, but missing mater detune and parameter lock for my usage. I will give 5 stars if changed. Nice sounding synth otherwise.

Garbage as an auv3

PEPGOONER on

Keeps crashing in GarageBand. Insists that ‘ButterSynth is not installed on your iPad’. Paying a premium price for this on iOS I expect a little more stability (understatement). Will probably try with Logicpro now but I’m not optimistic. Very disappointed. And patches in standalone mode sound entirely different when used as an auv3. Just a ridiculous app. Unusable. I’m on a 2022 iPad Air M1.

Power-house synth

Digimidgi on

Love this synths sound and its very deep but… The midi mapping is a horrible experience. Please let us - midi learn - for our templates

Doesn’t run well on my Air 4 - lots of crashes.

Familychoice on

I’m getting a lot of crashes - in standalone, and hosted in AUM. I’ve got a lot of synths and music apps, but this is the only app that crashes on my Air 4. Seriously thinking about refunding this one, as it seems to require more resources than my Air 4 can provide.

Still not good

Mango4two on

I never expected so much from a synth and I never was more disappointed in a synth. Especially in Logic Pro, even now after the update it still keeps crashing and automation still doesn’t work either. I think I’ll have to give up on ButterSynth now. Before the synth came out it looked so promising. I’m disappointed. I wish I could get a refund for it.

Automation doesn’t work in Logic Pro

Mango4two on

It’s a great synth but if you intend to use it inside Logic Pro for iPad don’t buy it. The developer hasn’t implemented the touch automate guidelines properly and therefore automation doesn’t work inside Logic Pro for iPad. I’m a bit disappointed as I have noticed that other developers already have fixed this problem with their synths.

Immense Power and Beyond…

Midimania on

Just dropped by to say that after just a few weeks I have created 100s of awesome powerful presets, mixing wavetables with samples and FM oscillators creates sounds far beyond the imagination, downloaded over 3000 AKW .wav files and dropped all the folders directly into the Files app/ButterSynth/User/Samples/Instruments, they are instantly accessible when using the Sample Oscillator/Browse/User. BEST SYNTH ON APP STORE 🥇 8th MAY I would prefer preset IAP instead of having to search online. Samples over 10 seconds long tend to randomly drift + or - in pitch. No sample start/end/loop control. 1st May. I would be very interested to know if Midi Program Change is going to be implemented to this fine beast of a synth, the sounds are crystal sharp and loud and beautiful. I’m looking forward to new preset packs already…..mainly lead synth and perhaps some very lush Pads. This has to be the best iOS synth yet
