Pretty good hex and counter. The major issue is with the AI and RNG, they (AI) always seem to land more bomb and torpedo hits on a human player regardless of cap. Not just that, human player attacks always seem to miss and only score 1 or 2 bomb hits, even with a large air group. And it also seems unfair to give the AI 50% extra victory points for sinking ships when you play the IJN while only giving us a flat 10 points when playing as the USN. That just seems like the game favours the AI more then the player.
At first glance Carrier Battles for Guadalcanal looks to be an enjoyable mobile, hex, turn based strategic game. But it is a sloppy attempt to get your money and lure you to paying more. To begin, the game has NO SOUND...none at all. No background music, no attacking sounds...nada, zip, zilch! This alone makes the game a bust!
I was excited but I find I can’t do anything but read the rules and do 1 training mission (which doesn’t involve combat) until I spend more money. The basic game should be a complete game. Extra paid add-one should be just that: add-one. Feel ripped off.
I haven’t played all the scenarios yet nor all the add-ons like the Japanese side, but what I have played is pretty damn good. There are a couple of things that could be improved like the instructions and tutorial, but they are still fairly good. Some improvements are warranted like allowing players to ready aircraft after dark (why I can’t arm and fuel my aircraft for an early launch is a mistake). Also, I should be able to have transports and carriers in the same task force or a least be able to synchronize their speeds so the carrier can escort the transports.
Worth sticking with despite a few glitches in the training modules - clearly a labour of love and in any case the best rendition of a traditional paper-based wargame so far made for this platform. Nice balance of playability and detail. A few grognards (such as I, at first) might lament the absence of printed rules to refer to - but just stick with it and you will discover playing is truly an absorbing experience.
The game is incomprehensible. Endless training and you can't start the game till you go through it all. Waste of money.
Fantastic game - it puts you in the role of the world war 2 American carrier task force commander for the most part. It's a conversion of an old highly regarded solitaire board wargame updated to automate some of the repetitive work such as moving planes to an from the flight deck. If you have any interest at all in playing out world war 2 carrier battles in the Pacific this really is a must buy. I'm incredibly impressed with how this developed from its earliest beta versions which I helped test. Wonderful game!
This game is good. If you are interest in tactical carrier combat during wwii you should not miss the game. The tutorial or manual of the game is long as a iOS game but easy to learn if you give it time. The game is very hard to win. Some scenarios are not very balance like the one in Solomon sea. I still cannot win after many times of trying. The main Guadalcanal scenario is balance though. I hope there is difficulty setting. Not in terms of changing the order of battle, but rather give dice roll modifier so to keep the history order of battle intact. In terms of gameplay it depends a lot of luck and timing. CAP seems very weak in terms of protecting your carrier. If your carrier got spotted before you spot the Japanese carrier you are in deep trouble. You need to kind of hide your carriers, balancing the Air Force between CAP, air strike and searching mission, hoping to strike your enemy before they can do the same to you. It does reflect the real naval combat situation. It is luck based. But it is very intense and fun. In the market There are tons of war games about land hex based combat but very few about naval combat so this game is really something you cannot miss.
You are a real wargamer, you don't understand why there is no oldschool wargames on ios, you want a real hex based aero naval game, here you go. You won t find anyother, this one is the real stuff
