I had high hopes for this dictionary unfortunately it was a bit of a let down. What kind of a dictionary in this day and age doesn’t offer a feature to hear the word’s pronounced? The only way to get this feature is by highlighting the word then scroll to find “speak” option. Very clunky. They should learn from Pleco dictionary app!
Oops!
I said in my last review that I couldn’t move back from conjugations to the general dictionary. Completely wrong! It is exceptionally good and I can’t fault it
Brazilian v European Portuguese
Mostly I am enjoying the Portuguese Dictionary. I am roughly at intermediate stage in my acquisition of the language so it is serving my purpose well. Occasionally I find more obscure words are not listed. My main concern is the pronunciation guide and audio. Both draw on the Brazilian system and I am desperate to learn European Portuguese. The pronunciation of European Portuguese is markedly different and very difficult to get right. The ideal would be a facility to switch between the two. I tried to see if there was a separate European one to download but have failed to find such a version.
Disappointed
I bought this dictionary because I have used Collins dictionaries for other languages which are excellent. Unfortunately this one was unable to translate 90% of the names of fish on restaurant menus and was poor on other items too. Not as good as a premium product should be
Excellent
Excellent, especially with the conjugations. I use it all the time.
Latest version doesn't use up-to-date accents
In 2009, brazilian Portuguese went through some major updates, which include taking the dots off words with ü. Astoundingly, this dictionary has the OLD versions of words, despite having been recently updated. I find the new update more stable than the last version, but it's actually quite confusing to navigate. I also feel that the explanations have become shorter & that there are key English words missing, which then do appear when the Portuguese word is entered. E.g. 'To distance (oneself) - afastar-se. Afastar-se is only given if you search the English 'to remove' but there is no option to search 'to distance', even though this is given as an English translation when you search 'afastar-se'.
All of sudden!
Fantastic app, but now I'm having the same difficulties mentioned above! I try to type a word and the whole app crashes?! Please help!!
Good app
An expensive app (at more than £20), but well worth the money - except briefly while there was a bug that crashed my 3Gs. Hats off to the programmers for fixing it reasonably promptly (31 May '12).
Update crashes on 3GS-want a fix or refund
I was very happy with this excellent dictionary until the recent update. Now the app crashes every time I try to type a word search. Collins, please fix this and post a new update that works on 3GS as I have paid alot of money for this app.
