Description

Distant Suns: The night sky, reimagined.
2013 finalist in the Family category of TabTimes' best tablet app contest;
"I am putting together some mobile astronomy apps for our local "Sky's the Limit" Observatory in Twentynine Palms, CA. I have been searching for something as good as, or better than, Distant Suns. Short answer: I have not found it yet. ...nothing portrays the night sky as well as Distant Suns.
Distant Suns has been your personal guide to the cosmos since 1985. First on the desktop, now right in your hands. While others play games, you can travel to the stars.
Award-winning Distant Suns has the reputation of both having one of the most realistic displays of the night sky, while being one of the easiest to use astronomy apps for casual sky watchers as well as serious astronomers.

Broken

Kluseau on

Simply fails to open on an iPad mini using iOS 14.6. Tried deleting the app, then redownloading and reinstalling it, but it’s still broken.

It just won’t open but crashes every time.

Gone downhill

The old version was so good I bought the full version. The recent UI changes have made it all but unusable. It’s unresponsive and non-intuitive. Very disappointed.

Total rewrite and all new

No AR - obsolete app!

I bought this for AR, but in app help says this has been disabled due to incompatibilities with IOS8! This is bad - there has been no update to this App since mid '15

Distant suns has been my go to sky app whilst I've been tootling around the heavens with binoculars. It's detailed and uses an intuitive user interface that allows you to experiment with the settings and set it up as you like. There are a multitude of ways to display information and it makes discovering the stars very easy. There are a couple of issues for me. Firstly, as I move to telescoping the sky, I find that the type of information I want isn't presented. In my previous telescope days I was a fan of double star observing. Sadly, distant suns doesn't indicate which stars are doubles. Whilst information on double stars is available the standard horizontal line through a dot representation of double stars isn't present and if you didn't know which stars were doubles you would have a rascal of a time stumbling across them. Neither is their an option to find them. Icons for deep sky objects do conform to standard icons though, although there is no list of the NGC catalogues. Secondly, I purchased the Hubble guide star catalogue upgrade, but I'm not sure it works properly. Maybe it doesn't cover the whole sky but Wikipedia says it does. So it confuses me as to why there are big gaps in its representation in the app. Scrolling around you can actually follow the line where the catalogue stars ends and each time I open the app the gap is in a different place. But having said that, the addition of the Hubble catalogue does make spotting open clusters an such much easier. For really serious astronomers who may wish to control telescopes etc this may not be the app for them. If you are a non double star seeking, general visual or photo astronomer, or if you and your binoculars are becoming serious amigos then distant suns will serve you well.

Very good but update not loading

This is an excellent app, but was unable to update. So decided to delete the app and download from scratch, but same problem, only I have no app at all now!!
