“I came across Dr. Moku's Hiragana Mnemonics....Thirty minutes later I had memorized all hiragana". - BoingBoing.net
Mnemonics are memory tricks that use humor or a memorable personal connection to help you fix and break associations so your brain has no choice but to remember.
Perfect for the complete beginner, young or old, this is the foolproof and definite way to master the first steps in learning Japanese.
Each screen presents a Hiragana character along with a mnemonic clue and audio clip. Read the clue, listen to the clip and move on to the next one. The alternating bold colors will 'reset' your brain so you start fresh with each character. Then take a quiz! You will be amazed at your ability to recall Hiragana after just a few minutes.
This free Lite Version covers 25% of Hiragana. We offer an in-app purchase which adds the entire mnemonic system, additional quizzes, word search game etc.

I don’t like that I have to pay to learn all of the alphabet because this was my only chance to learn Japanese on my device

I learned a lot from it, but I didn’t learn all hiragana, you really helped me tho, I only got to learn 3 words in hiragana from this app, and prob like 15 letters. This app was amazing but maybe try adding more words and letters, I love this app so much, I have now downloaded the free katakana one, and now am learning katakana, you really helped me! But like I said, try adding a couple more words and like 20 more letters, :D I will deffinetly say you should lower the price from 5 USD to 2 USD.

It’s alright

I didn’t really learn much and was disappointed that you couldn’t really learn enough unless you pay

I downloaded this lite version of the app just to try it out. I was amazed at how quickly I was able to memorize many Japanese letters! I have multiple other free apps that help memorize hiragana, but the letters made no sense to me and it was incredibly difficult to learn and retain even a few of them. With Dr. Moku, you associate the letters with pictures and silly phrases. This made all the difference and I bought the full version immediately. I have easily retained every hiragana letter for a year now. Also there are quizzes, a step by step of how to write each letter, and an extensive vocabulary list when you purchase the full version. I very rarely buy apps, but this one is worth every penny. Dr Moku also has an app to help learn katakana. I promise you it is essential if you want to learn and easily retain the katakana alphabet. You can be stubborn like I was and try to learn on your own, but you will not regret purchasing both apps. As a bonus, you can purchase both apps as a bundle and save a few dollars! If I could give Dr Moku’s apps more than 5 stars I would!

Works Really Fast

I heard about this app when I was searching online for the best apps to learn Japanese. I tried the lite version and realized it had me reading hiragana in minutes, so I had the upgrade to the full version. I am using this along with Rosetta Stone and they pair really well together. Make sure you try out the quizzes and word search. Kinda a sneaky way to learn some vocabulary while learning hiragana. Also the app creator responded to my questions right away personally which I thought was very nice.
