"After a half hour, I was blazing through each exercise: highly recommended for beginners". - The Huffington Post

“I came across Dr. Moku's Hiragana Mnemonics....Thirty minutes later I had memorized all hiragana". - BoingBoing.net

Mnemonics are memory tricks that use humor or a memorable personal connection to help you fix and break associations so your brain has no choice but to remember.

Perfect for the complete beginner, young or old, this is the foolproof and definite way to master the first steps in learning Japanese.

Each screen presents a Hiragana character along with a mnemonic clue and audio clip. Read the clue, listen to the clip and move on to the next one. The alternating bold colors will 'reset' your brain so you start fresh with each character. Then take a quiz! You will be amazed at your ability to recall Hiragana after just a few minutes.

This free Lite Version covers 25% of Hiragana. We offer an in-app purchase which adds the entire mnemonic system, additional quizzes, word search game etc.

Good, but could be better

kessa33 on

Seems like it could be a good app but sadly the “lite” version (at the time of writing) only has 15 hiragana out of 46 so for it to be of any use as a learning tool you need to buy the full version. However it’s a useful “taster” of what the full version might be like.

Amazing app

Aisha9200 on

Literally learned hirgana and katakana off by heart- the good think about this is that you just have to buy it once and its there if you ever forget your characters. I think this must be the best japanese character app out there- i used this last year and still remember the character. AMAZING! Thankyou- looking forward to more languages like chinese !

Broken! Updated and lost purchases!

A decent app, or so I thought. I purchased the full version to get all the symbols, and went updated I lost everything and the app is telling me to upgrade again! Horrible and broken! Waste of money!!

Fun and effective

Melpomene4 on

An entertaining and effective method of committing the hiragana to memory. Using this app I've learnt the 46 characters in a single morning. Quirky images help greatly. Previously I'd tried other apps and books but was struggling to distinguish the characters and was making slow progress. Highly recommended.

Really good!

ゆりやさ on

This app is really good. I learnt all of hiragana in under 2 hours after going through the learning slides 3 or 4 times I got 100% on the quiz. This app gives you a picture using the character to help you remember it (e.g. お-pronounced o- it looks like a man thrOwing a bOne) The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because some of the images it gives you to remember it by arent that good, for me anyway, so I found it hard to remember those characters. But, I came up with my own ones such as か-pronounced ka- it said to remember it as an evil face (it doesn't look like one) and remember 'batman will never KAtch the villain!' I couldn't remember this so I thought of my own thing and imagined that it looked like a person KAtching something. Same with に (ni) and a few other ones. I also have it four stars because it doesn't teach you the characters that use ど (the two little lines in the top right corner) と-to, ど-do. It does not say anything about that. But overall it's really good and a fun and easy way to remember it! どうもありがとう!

Better than expected

Professsor Sy on

After trying the free version I thought this was incredibly childish and found it annoying. So, I returned to my Hiragana flashcards app which I was struggling with. Lo and behold, I remembered, without fail, all the symbols using the method in the free version I had just scoffed at. Now, I use it repeatedly. My only criticism is the interface doesn't feel completely user friendly.

Brilliant!!

The use of pictures to help you memorise the letters really works and makes learning them fun:)

Great app

I love this app. Made the boring memorising seamless, quick and fun. If you're trying to learn Japanese writing then this definitely will make your life MUCH easier. Can't wait for the Arabic one as well! Well done guys! Keep up the excellent work!
