To me
1. The notes you can add to a workout don’t provide enough space. For weight lifting, I like to type out the exercises I did with sets, reps, weight, rest time. I can’t fit one of my workouts into the length that the notes are limited to. 2. App doesn’t show post-workout heart rate recovery. It writes that data to the Apple Watch fitness app, but gentler streak doesn’t show it in their app. 3. For mile splits, app doesn’t show power in W for each mile like the Apple Watch fitness app does. Hard to pay for a subscription service and have less features in some areas than the native Apple fitness app.
I don’t pay for many apps but this is one I’ll never cancel. I have been working on my fitness for years and had a hard time with consistency. Some weeks I’d overdo it, some weeks I’d get discouraged, etc. I like the suggested activities and being able to track my stats weekly/monthly/yearly. It keeps me motivated. Also, the mascot is adorable and the UI is great.
The app is otherwise fine but, you have to have an Apple Watch to use it. I don’t have one, and I can’t see my steps like I would with other apps. Gentler does help me keep being active because I have to log in the app what exercise I did. Example: today I did an hour and 32 minute bike ride, and it made me type what time I started, what time I ended, and what type of exercise I did, unlike most apps which automatically log your exercise.
Ho
There is a weakness in this app that the Apple Fitness app doesn't have. If I've forgotten to end a workout, walk or whatever, it's totally oblivious. Yesterday I used the app toward the end of the day, didn't stop the app before I took my watch off & went to bed. In the morning all my apps - Gentler Streak, Apple Fitness, Apple Health - showed a 9 hour long but very short walk. I'm used to my fitness app being aware that I've stopped moving & alerting me: this seems like a simple feature, no reason for such a highly-rated app to lack it. And to keep logging activity on an Apple Watch that's in Nightstand Mode? That's really silly. At least it was a chance to find out how to delete invalid data, which is easy enough, but shouldn't such an elaborate app include such a basic feature??
I actually enjoy this app overall, but one of the latest updates has added a “please sign up for our newsletter” ad to the main screen, with no apparent way to remove it without signing up for the newsletter. Given that I’m already a paid subscriber, that’s a pretty gross addition—I get enough spam from free services, I don’t need it from paid ones as well.
I really wish it took into account daily steps. Was in a different state for a work conference and racked up above average steps every day for a week - because of no recorded workouts, my activity path has sunk & is a total bummer. Maybe even just the option to view with and without could help - seeing the dots trend to nothing is demotivating if anything.
I really want to love this app. There’s a lot I do love about it. But it seems to continuously think that I am pushing myself too hard, when really I feel like I’m being too light. It’s been this way for a couple of weeks now. It thinks that my “usual range” for exertion is at the bottom of the gauge and seemingly refuses to update that impression. There really needs to be some way of resetting the app’s expectations of my fitness, because it seems to think that I can’t even take a light walk every day without telling me to take it easy. So at the moment it’s very pretty but kind of useless. I’ll update my review if they can add a workaround for this other than “just wait it out.”
Been using for a few days and already love it! I would give a 4.5 if I could. The one feature I'd most like to see added is a "chronic illness" mode. I got the premium version as an alternative to the much pricier Visible Health subscription. I do love that Gentler Streak tells me when I'm pushing too hard, but it'd be awesome to have an option for saying I have a chronic illness that requires more days of rest that most people / a lower exertion threshold, a place to add in medications and conditions that impact HR, conditions that impact sleep and fatighe, etc. Otherwise a great app! If you don't have an energy-limiting illness it's an excellent way to move more without the guilt.
