This official Leap Top-Up app from Transport for Ireland (TFI) allows you to check your balance, top-up your TFI Leap Cardand purchase tickets - directly from your NFC-enabled iPhone.
Open the app and simply hold your TFI Leap Card to the back, top of your iPhone to instantly check your balance, collect a pre-paid ticket, or top-up your card – anytime, anywhere.

Only one working feature
This app is only helpful to check the balance on your leap card, and from what I’ve seen in the reviews, some can’t even do that. Every time I try to “top up” the card (the central feature of the app, as the name would suggest), the payment system buffers and fails, regardless of the internet connection. Great idea for an app though.
Can’t scan card
Scanner doesn’t work. Not possible to enter details manually. Useless app.
Doesn’t work as all reviews but one state
Great idea except you can’t actually use it. Downloaded several times now, read directions. It’s not the phone it’s the app.
Booo
Keeps adding money to mine and my friends card when we scan to check out balance…. Annoying
Reader randomly doesn’t work
Reading the app developer replies here is amusing. They all imply user error. I place the card in the same spot every time and repeat the exact steps, yet it randomly stops working. This does not happen with any other NFC scenario or app. I develop apps for a living, it’s obvious there is a big fat bug in the implementation of this app. Given that the behavior is random I’d guess it’s a multi-threaded deadlock type of bug. These are hard to reproduce and fix but whatever’s going on it’s obvious there’s something broken.
Doesn’t work on iPhone 14 pro
Upgraded my phone and now nothing happens when I tap “open scanner”. Works fine with same card and other devices, and my nfc is otherwise working fine. Now I guess I have to go to Spar.
great idea, terrible execution
My app only reads my card 10% of the time. Extremely frustrating when it is not able to read it. I have read the instructions multiple time and have a new iphone so my conclusion is the issue is in the app not the user!!
Scanner will not even open
It worked for a week, then it stopped reading the card and now it’s frozen in the scanner opening page. Not possible to scan at all. Tried reinstalling app but still doesn’t work. Iphone SE (2nd gen)
Unable to scan card
The app did not work for me at all. It constantly said “Error reading card” no matter how many times I tried to scan my card. The card works just fine on the bus and with Android phones. There is no way to enter the card number, so I can’t use the app to top up. iPhone 13, latest iOS 15 version, no cover on the phone.
