There are over 290 million people who speak Malay. It is a major language spoken in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Malay is not a tonal language, does not distinguish gender (he/she/it), does not have grammatical tense (go/went/gone), It is now written using the Latin script, although an Arabic script also exists.
The banknotes of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore have the Malay script. Malay is the official language in these four countries.
馬來語主要使用於馬來西亞以及文萊、新加坡、印尼蘇門達臘島的部分地區等。馬來語是馬來西亞、新加坡和文萊的國語，並在4個東南亞國家或地區擁有官方語言地位。這四個國家的貨幣上均有馬來文。
在馬來西亞，大概有1,300萬人是以馬來語為母語，約佔全國人口的55%。此外，在馬來西亞還有1,000萬人是以馬來語作為他們的第二語言。至於在其他國家，印尼的蘇門達臘也有1,000萬的馬來語使用人口，泰國有100萬，新加坡則有40萬人左右。
