There are over 290 million people who speak Malay. It is a major language spoken in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Malay is not a tonal language, does not distinguish gender (he/she/it), does not have grammatical tense (go/went/gone), It is now written using the Latin script, although an Arabic script also exists.
The banknotes of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore have the Malay script. Malay is the official language in these four countries.
말레이시아나 싱가포르에서는 Bahasa Melayu(말레이어), 인도네시아에서는 Bahasa Indonesia(인도네시아어/인니어), 브루나이에서는 Bahasa Melayu Brunei(브루나이 말레이어)라고 하지만, 실제로는 모두 말레이어가 기반이기 때문에 말레이어를 국어로 사용하는 국가에서는 대부분 통한다.
그러나 이 국가들에서 나타나는 말레이어 양상이 다 제각각이라 서로 완벽하게 통하지는 않는다. 그래서 현대 인니어와 말레이어의 차이는 영국 영어와 미국 영어, 또는 남한의 표준어와 북한의 문화어 정도의 차이가 있다고 보면 된다. 또한 브루나이 말레이어, 수도권 말레이어, 회화 말레이어 등 일부 방언은 차이가 크다. 다만 구어일 때의 차이가 가장 크며, 문어에서는 사실상 큰 차이가 보이지 않는다.
