Description

This universal app is part of a set of idevbooks math apps. Reviewed by Wired.com: "A Set of Excellent iPhone Math Apps for the Older Child”.
The Long Multiplication math app can be used to teach and study the long multiplication method.
Endorsed by teachers
Rita Zeni, Ecole Sandy Hill Elementary, Abbotsford, BC, Canada:
"The math apps by Esa Helttula allow students to practice and reinforce the specific computation strategies taught in class, with as much or as little scaffolding as necessary.
They also provide individualized feedback to each student, with an immediacy that is not always possible through pencil and paper practice. Being able to adjust the level of difficulty to suit their needs is also very motivating for the students. I am so glad to have come across this great educational tool!"
Kelly Tenkely, iPad Curriculum:
"The step by step animation and guidance will help students get the column method of multiplication down in no time. The ability to enter their own numbers means that students can input problems from a math curriculum or textbook and work through the step-by-step process with any problem. Your reluctant math students will love this app, it will act as their own personal tutor sitting with them and encouraging them on!"
The long multiplication method
In arithmetic, long multiplication is the standard procedure suitable for multiplying numbers. The method breaks down a multiplication problem into a series of easier steps.
Easy to use
The Long Multiplication math app allows the user to solve a long multiplication problem step by step and animates all the steps. In the steps the user will multiply or add. The correct answer will fly to the right place. If the user presses the wrong button the answer will appear above the keyboard but it will not move.
Features:
- The multiplicand can have up to 5 digits
- The multiplier can have up to 4 digits
- You can set your own problems
- You can have decimals in the numbers
- The current operation for each column can be hidden
- The operands for the current operation can be highlighted
- Five different themes
- Native interfaces for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad

When you get to the second row it carries incorrectly. It carries one column to the left and is visually very confusing.

I love this app and used to use it in my fourth grade classroom throughout my multiplication unit as a great opportunity for differentiated, engaging practice with instant feedback! I am very disappointed with the new update though, since it makes the app no longer compatible with my 2nd generation iPods. In the world of education, it is not easy to get the newest technology offered especially when as of 3 years ago my district bought me enough iPods for each of my students. I wish I could still use this app on my class set of iPods, but they can no longer be updated with new software versions. Please allow your apps to continue to work with the older iPod software versions since this was created to help teachers and students in the first place.

Walks you through it

Walks through the problems step by step. Wont move on until that part is right. But.. carries the numbers on the bottom instead of the top which is confusing at first. No option to print problems inputed which would help with homework. It would be nice to input a group of problems to be done and then print them when finished

Ok but not that exciting or creative.

This summer I wanted to get some multiplication Apps for 9 yr old son so he could keep up his skills for the 4th grade. An Educational App for a child should be entertaining while they are learning. The App should keep the attention of the child and make the child want to "play" with it. There are many ways to do this. None of which are in this App. There are no explanations, no music, no rewards, nothing. It's just plain and to honest rather boring. This App is good for a teaching aid when reviewing but even then it's boring. There are much better Apps out there not to mention cheaper too. 3.99 is way too much to pay for this App. I would of given the App 3 stars but at 3.99 it got bumped down to only 2 stars.

great math learning app

Another great tool to learn math. Long multiplication is nicely illustrated by smooth animation in a step-by-step fashion. It's a great way to conceptualize math problems.

Wonderful for teaching multiplication!

This app does a great job at showing kids the steps in solving a multi-step multiplication problem. They get more practice with a concept that is difficult for many to learn (especially my special needs students) beyond the simple learning of multiplication facts. Great APP!!

Nicely done

I like this app's step by step demonstration of long multiplication, and I especially like the option of using your own numbers.
