Description

LuckGrib is a fully featured, easy to use, fast GRIB reader, viewer, downloader and weather router. Remote access to weather data via satellite or email is supported. Advanced weather routing capabilities, for sailors, is available.

Weather forecast data, packaged as GRIB files, can be downloaded directly from the LuckGrib server cluster.

For offshore sailors, LuckGrib offers a best-in-class, complete solution: industry leading visualization and ease of use, highly optimized weather data downloads via satellite, along with industry leading optimized weather routing and route analysis. Inshore sailors may not require satellite downloads, but will benefit from the rest of the system.

LuckGrib is unique among apps that were originally designed for sailors, in that the weather analysis tools are powerful enough to attract attention from meteorologitsts.

For meteorologists, and weather enthusiasts, LuckGrib offers access to a wide range of high resolutions models, a number of global models, weather data at the surface, 850mb, 500mb and 250mb levels, parameters ranging from simple things such as wind, pressure and temperature, to more advanced quantities such as simulated radar, standard deviations, precipitable water, lightning, vertical vorticity, helicity and more. Access is available to the entire suite of parameters in GFS, HRRR, NAM and others.

Downloads are available via: a direct high speed internet connection, through the Iridium GO! as well as through the RedPort Optimizer.

LuckGrib provides access to many weather and ocean models, including: GFS, GFS Wave, GDPS/GEM, GEFS, HRRR, RAP, NAM, NBM, Icon-EU, Arpège, Arome, OpenWRF, RTOFS, NCOM and many others. These models allow you to study surface conditions, wave and swell state, ocean currents, winds at the jet stream level, mid atmosphere as well as at the boundary layer. In addition, LuckGrib allows you to explore weather model uncertainty with its support for standard deviation and probability values. LuckGrib is a thoroughly modern and advanced GRIB viewer.

The LuckGrib isochronal Weather Routing solver is able to respect intermediate constraint points, the first in the industry. A constraint point is a point which a route must leave to port or starboard. Constraint points are needed to describe short routes which have crossings, as well as to express your preference on a long open ocean passage to stay to a given side of a strategic point. A simple example of a short route that needs this ability is a route which goes around an island, returning to the start point. Many sailboat race routes, perhaps the majority, have routes which cross. Two examples are Fastnet and the Around Catalina Island race. These routes can now be described in LuckGrib, and optimized Weather Routing solutions found for them.

Trouble downloading

Hello This app can only download when one is connected to the wifi!!!!! Otherwise it is very good

A brilliant Apo for sailors and excellent value

This is my go to for passage planning. It’s great to select a larger area than needed to see how the weather is moving. The refresh feature is awesome to easily update the forecast as the days pass.

A cracking app for sailors

Grib files - easy to select areas, detail changes as I soon in and out. Predictions can be set to 16 days and easy to refresh for more realistic predictions closer to the time. Lots of prediction models to check. Once downloaded can do looked at offline.

Fantastic

Across Atlantic but forgot that the planner was only 14 days - so ended up doing myself. Rest of it is very easy. Only we used iridium go. My iridium and red box would not download the grib .

Responsive developer

On top of an excellent piece of software Craig McPheeters is responsive to users needs and suggestions. A1 product. Go get it. Even if you’re not a sailor!

Classy Software

I have been using LuckGrib for about a year now, and although I am not one for writing reviews I felt the need to do so for LuckgGrib. It is a well written and classy piece of software with excellent visual presentation. With all due respect to the folk who have down marked the app.. it is their lack of understanding about GRIB files, and how to interpret them through LuckGrib that is the problem. The app has an integrated tutorial that automatically runs for new users, it is a genuinely useful system and new users should follow/participate before attempting to use the app. LuckGrib offers a multitude of GRIB file downloads from their own server, and a slick fast visual range of viewing options. The weather routing (with yacht model) option is also excellent, being both fast and offering a number of unique visual aids to help interpret the routing result(s). Yacht models and routing calculations are all local to the device running the app. The satellite download option has also worked flawlessly for us; which is an essential feature while sailing offshore. My wife and I are permanent “live-a-board” sailors and have sailed half way around the world on our catamaran. I started off - as many do - using Predict Wind, a subscription based product that offers just four GRIB file options (two of which are their own variant models). Routing calculations are carried out on their own servers and so hidden from the user.. this also making vessel model modifications impossible while at sea. Having since moved to LuckGrib, a pay once application, I feel that we have improved our ability to easily download and view forecasted weather, and to safely plan our next or current passage.

A simple, reliable, easy to use Grib file forecast

The LuckGrib App not only transforms sailing intelligently planned around reliable weather forecasts, it’s also a powerful routing tool. We have sat in an anchorage on a sunny day knowing that the following two days would have full blown gales knowing that 3 days later there would be steady winds for two days to allow us to make an pleasant and safe passage. I tried this app a few months ago and it opened Grib2 files. I bought the app but found it had been changed. I used it on an iPad, it is far from intuitive and I had to ask for help. As a Grib viewer, it is clumsy compared, say, to PocketGrib. I used the email address on the website but emails did not go - using my iCloud account. Frustrating. Give it 3 stars

Excellent App

Aside from the huge choice of models the passage planning meteogram along a moving line is very good and has proven to be very accurate on a recent offshore crossing.

Where is the sea state shown please?

Is sea state shown somewhere? Otherwise very good
