Magic FAQ
Is Magic free?
Yes, Magic is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is Magic legit?
⚠️ The Magic app has poor ratings and negative feedback. Users seem unsatisfied with its performance or features.
Constantly have to log back in. Usually refuses to update game scores. Doesn’t display required information. I hate using this for tournaments, and would use anything else if it were an option.
Another example of Wizards of the Coast cheaping out on developing the tools to maintain the community that supports their game.
Buggy and kind of annoying but useful
Seems to snap back to Home Screen for no reason while you’re trying to search for cards; Somewhat user hostile; a LOT of the cards in the database have the wrong card showing; double faced cards are not accounted for (back side never shown, back side text not reported in the Oracle text for some dumb reason). Crashes about 50% of the time immediately upon opening.
Crashing issue
Game consistently crashes when in the middle of a game
Fix it
Buggy, laggy, and chronically under-updated. Get it together; this is your main match app!!
It’s barely usable — I recommend alternative apps or websites
I got into MTG during the pandemic and really enjoy the game. I subscribe to the mastery pass every set release and follow along with MTG news and updates. I’ve hoped for a couple of years that this app would get better or the standard of quality would get to an acceptable level but even small, important changes haven’t been addressed (see point 3 below). I feel somewhat guilty to be so critical but this is bad when websites offering similar functionality exist and are better. With the newest update (and prior ones) here are my issues:
card images are very poor quality; websites that contain databases of MTG cards are better quality than the official app and this is the number one thing that must be updated. It’s embarrassingly bad quality. If you’re worried about network performance or app size, you could offer users an option to choose image size/quality.
the sort-options/view pickers in the card view (e.g. sort by name) automatically apply when you lift your finger from the screen. It’s too sensitive and takes several tries to select what you intend.
the arrows indicating you can scroll between views/sections of the app block important interactions with the screen. For example, when trying to tap the “search” button on the cards screen you must tap the area above the swiping directional arrows otherwise the button doesn’t register a tap. You need to move the button or make the swiping indicators disappear or inactive. I’ve been dealing with this one since I started monitoring this app and can’t believe it hasn’t been addressed in years.
Glossary Needed
I think the only thing that is missing is a glossary of key terms or evergreen terms. I think this may be helpful to newer players or those that struggle to keep a couple keywords straight in their heads.
Some history and errata information might be included here as well, such as how hexproof evolved from shroud, and how ward has most recently been included to balance play.
Janky AF
Will usually 404 and get locked with the keyboard open. Not the greatest experience
Pretty bad!
Forced to use it for events, otherwise, no chance!
Add ability to flip double sided cards
With all the double sided cards being created, it is a huge limitation to not be able to see the other side.
