MARU: Learn Japanese Hiragana

Free Beginner Kana Practices

Published by: Overdreamer

Description

Hey there! (•u•) Interested in learning Japanese but don't know where to start? You've come to the right place! MARU Japanese Kana, loved by over a million learners worldwide with an average rating of 4.9 (thank you so much!), is just what you need. As a lifelong learner of Japanese myself, I created this app to make Japanese alphabets less intimidating and more enjoyable. It's a simple app that focuses on one thing but does it very well: helping you start learning Japanese. I wish MARU had been around when I started learning Japanese. Lucky you!
Stop learning with those robotic voices and non-native pronunciations. That will impede your learning effectiveness. Dive in and experience authentic Japanese through exercises voiced by a professional voice actress. With 14 different practice varieties, learning Hiragana and Katakana becomes a breeze. Reading, writing, listening, typing, and even building your vocabulary – it's all here, making it the perfect start to your Japanese journey!
What's the catch? You’ll see an ad after every five mistakes. Since MARU's launch in 2017, it’s been downloaded over a million times, yet ad revenue has been modest. But that’s okay! My goal is to spread the joy of learning Japanese.
To fulfill that goal, I try to provide tremendous value for everyone and keep as little as possible behind the Pro Version.
Here’s what you’ll find in the default Free Version:
• All 105 Hiragana and Katakana characters, not just the basic ones.
• A short ad after 5 mistakes. No mistakes = No ads.
• Over 300 everyday words for practice, like "hello" and "thank you."
• Clear voice recordings for all words and characters.
• MARU-kun, our adorable mascot, greets and motivates you each time you practice.
• Date and Time that changes every minute to teach you Japanese words for numbers and calendar.
• A smart feature that identifies your weak spots and helps you improve.
• A fun way to practice Katakana using familiar Hiragana words.
My app is completely free with minimal ads, but if you choose to upgrade to the Pro Version (one-time purchase), you’ll enjoy:
• An ad-free experience.
• Offline practice, anytime, anywhere.
• Writing and typing exercises.
• Timed challenges to test yourself.
• Access to more words for time, date, and Katakana.
Don't just take my word for it. Here’s one of my favorite reviews:
"This is MY #1 app for learning Japanese. I downloaded EVERY Japanese app I could find without paying a single dime. The app does exactly what it promises - nice graphics, great voice acting, and awesome practice methods. I'm in love with this awesome app!" - A happy user
Thanks for reading! If you're interested, just download and start your Japanese learning adventure with MARU! (•u•)

MARU Reviews

THIS WORKS

hairfriend on

This is the first app where I feel like I’m actually retaining the information. I’m only at about 45 hiragana characters and I’m starting to be able to read a lot of words and getting used to the way things are pronounced so my listening comprehension is getting better. Easy to patient while standing in line. Highly recommend.

Great and Simple

This app is designed very well and is a cute and effective way to get people to learn Japanese. I appreciate that there are only punishment ads, and I love the daily reminders. I hope in the future there will be grammar rules and kanji, but I am satisfied with this for most basic hiragana and katakana, including vocabulary.

Most helpful app I’ve used

I like literally everything about this app. I even like that you only get ads when you get so many wrong. When I’m having trouble remembering how to write a character or in what order to do the stroke, I’ve found this to be the best for a quick reference guide. Also great for a quick drill session to keep the memory fresh

This is like crack cocaine for studying japanese

I struggle a lot with focusing and motivation for basically everything (probably ADHD lol), and all the other apps I’ve tried like this were kind of meh at best and i only was consistent at studying for a couple days at best. BUT THIS APP IS SO DIFFERENT. Literally i’ve gotten addicted to it inthe first 5 minutes, in a good way! I’d buy the full version right now if i had money to spare, but luckily because the developer is super nice, it’s still super fun (and effective!) on the ad version! This uses the most creative way i’ve ever seen someone integrate ads into their app. Basically you get an ad for every 5 mistakes you make, so it’s kind of like a health system in a video game. That helps my motivation to not mess up and instead focus, AND they can make money when i do inevitably mess up! It’s genius!! Not to mention, the dev is super open about being a one person team and about how ads are annoying but are a necessity to keep it free, so I’m totally on the dev’s side because of the clarity! And the full version is only like $15 for life, so I’d consider that a steal! As for some of the content itself, it doesn’t hold your hand with romaji (or rather, it’s a setting I turned off to make it harder on myself and more effective), it cleverly gives you simple yet common words to help learn the kanas, there’s actual audio from an actual person, and there’s clever spaced repetition! Basically everything I want in a language learning app. Solid 5 stars.

Best App For Self Taught

P1ncu5 on

It doesn't take a long time to learn all of the Kana (Hiragana/Katakana) off of this app. It's so satisfying to unlock the new rows and every correct answer gives you that dopamine that lets you keep learning. It's very easy to learn and it actually takes you row by row instead of apps like duolingo which take you column by column which is way harder.

Actually Extremely Effective

It has a really easy interface and it is really charming. This app is way better than most of the alphabet apps I’ve seen because doesn’t hide its content behind a paywall. So, you still are able to educate yourself happily with either the free or paid version :)

非常棒的app

对初学者来讲,反复练习是最好的。这个应用确实能帮助初学者最快熟悉五十音。

I wish every app was like this

Not only is this an excellent language learning app, it is also one of the best and most well-designed apps I’ve ever used. The interface is simple and easy to use. Has recognition, listening, writing, and Japanese keyboard practice options with the ability to customize the practice types. The pricing structure is brilliant— if you make a certain number of mistakes, you watch an ad. No mistakes, no ads. I did end up buying premium because I liked the app so much, but you could EASILY and enjoyably use this for free.

AMAZING.

Okay so I used to use Duolingo but I didn’t know how to read Hirigana and Katana so I gave up. Then I looked up Japanese learning apps and came across this one. Read the reviews and they all said that it helped, so I downloaded it and gave it a try. Just bought pro for Xmas, but it’s useable without pro. The ads as a punishment is very creative, but other than that there’s no ads whatsoever. 10/10, would recommend.
