Description

MathU RPN is an advanced scientific and financial calculator designed in the spirit of classic HP calculators. MathU RPN is based on the Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) entry system and combines more than 96 functions to create a calculator that meets the needs of professionals who use a calculator every day. First released in 2008, the calculator continues to be updated with new features as iOS improves.

MathU RPN works on the iPhone and iPad. On the iPad, MathU RPN maintains its orientation as the iPad is turned and you can rotate it from portrait to landscape keypad layout via the Rotate button. When the iPad has a hardware keyboard attached, you can type of the names of the buttons the keyboard to execute them -- thus avoiding having to press the calculator keys with your finger. On the iPhone, you can lock it to use the portrait or landscape keypad or let it switch orientations automatically when you rotate your phone.

MathU RPN is an excellent financial calculator. There are functions for computing mortgage amortization and cash flow computations like IRR and NPV, as well as functions for working with dates. Many of the existing financial functions have been extended to handle odd periods (conforming to the same conventions as the HP-12C). In addition, on tall devices (like most iPhones), the financial registers are displayed on the keypad.

MathU RPN is also a programmer's calculator. The A-F keys are available right up front for easy entry in HEX mode and there are many functions for working with integers.

Dr. Clay M. Thompson of Creative Creek has harnessed the computational power of the iPhone to produce an accurate and high performance calculator.

Expensive but really excellent

jorgen315 on

Expensive, but excellent. I have owned/used countless HP calculators in math and finance since the late 70ies (from hp25 to the latest hp50g) and Im a very discriminating user. I have used many of the RPN math calculators on my iPod and generally like them. However if I am at my desk I would always take one of HP's real calculators (normally the HP15C I bought in 1983), because 1) the keyboard is bigger, 2) you can feel the keys and 3) my old eyes find all but Mathu's HP12c calculator difficult to read. Not so with MathU RPN. I have just performed a huge amount of calculations and to my big surprise, I was equally happy using either my HP15C or the MathU RPN calculator. I loved the featherlight touch on the MathU RPN keys and I ended up doing most of the calculations on this. The keys are of the right size, they are easy to read and the functions are placed where they feel natural. Best of all, it has the MOD function I always missed on HP's calculators. You have the choice between a stack height of 4 or 16. I like the latter, but change to 4 if I am need the automatic t-register duplication in repeated calculations. The compound interest functions work exactly like on the HP-12C (with the same rounding up of the number of periods [I personally prefer a mathematically correct solution found on Mathematica and MathU's calculators for PPCs and Palms]). The statistical functions work like on the HPs (except some of the sums are stored on "STO-dot" memory locations (good idea!) If you change to OCT, BIN or HEX, the financial functions are replaced by function for bit manipulation. In short: highly recommended!
