Works beautifully albeit somewhat dated

The best solution if you want to listen to mods and other tracker formats. Honestly, this earns 5 stars from me purely for the fact this supports .hip files, very nice!

Great but issue.

Can’t rotate to landscape on any of my devices while FX are showing. It will crash instead. Sometimes the Initializing period is infinite. That’s all my problems with the app. This happens on: iPhone 4s iPhone Xr iPad 5th gen iPad Air 5th gen

Great chiptune platform.

I’m an nes chiptune composer, this app makes it possible for me to play NSF sound files on my IOS device. It’s a super helpful tool for me to listen to my work on the go

Good, but has issues

Overall probably the best mod/vgm player on the app store. It plays custom formats (amiga, arcade, genesis, etc) very accurately and supports a huge number of formats. The ability to download your favorite music from inside the app is fantastic. I also really like that you can easily view information stored in the custom formats, for example HVSC notes. But now for the bad news… Unfortunately, there are two pretty big issues: 1) trying to download from some integrated menus like vgmrips causes an instant app crash 100% of the time, and it’s been this way for months, which means I’m stuck with whatever songs I’ve already downloaded before this bug was introduced. Being unable to download new music on a music app seems like it should be a high priority to fix. 2) navigating through your music library and playlists is really confusing, it’s easy to get lost and hard to find the music you want sometimes. I’m not a user interface designer so I have no suggestions on how to fix it, I just know that it’s not very intuitive. Our choices for custom format game music playback on mobile devices is incredibly limited, and so this is probably your best option. Just know beforehand that there are going to be some rather large annoyances while using it.

Needs panning.

Everything is mono audio. But good app nonetheless.

Unrivaled

I’ve been using Modizer for many many years now, and back then it was better then anything out there in terms of retro VGM music playback. Today, with all the added updates, it’s so good, it even rivals (and in someways surpasses) Foobar and Winamp on PC. It’s extremely stable now, and has so many compatible file formats... it’s actually just absurd (it even supports .flac!). The biggest addition was an oscilloscope view for individual channels—alongside being able to mute channels to study the music construction. Simply put... Modizer today, is unrivaled. My only complaint is that I can’t use it on PC—how good it is. I look forward to whatever comes next with further updates... as this is already so darn good. If I could rate this app 7 stars... I would. Get. This. App. It slays. Seriously.

The best VGM player on iOS

Mitch_513 on

I’ve had this app installed for an extremely long time and after going through many various upgrades through the years, I can’t deny that there’s some excitement whenever I see an update pop up for this program. It’s great for it to finally have direct access to many VGM websites now like Project 2612 and even having the oscilloscope function along with turning channels on and off like those videos I watch on Youtube occasionally. If there is one thing I say that bothers me, it’s how the program handles .zip files now. Before, I was able to download a .zip containing music files, able to look inside the .zip and choose the song I’d like to play from that list. Now, it always plays from the first track and I have to select it through the playlist instead. Another thing I’d like to see as well is being able to access the player’s functions that are available in portrait mode in landscape as well (i.e Visualizers, turning infinite loops on/off), since I tend to use my iPad in landscape. Maybe that’s just nitpicking but all I can say is, keep up the good work!

I love/hate this app.

Modizer has some awesome things about it and some terrible things about it. The awesome is that it plays just about all of the modern file formats used for legacy game music. You can literally have thousands of game soundtracks from platforms like NES, Genesis, and arcade, to less popular stuff like Atari ST, PC-88, and MSX. The interface for adding new OSTs is intuitive, the tracks are usually bit accurate, and they take up barely any room at all. But it’s not all roses. The playlist functionality is unusable, and the random track feature only plays the first tracks out of any given pack. By far the most frustrating issue, however, is the fact that the app periodically needs to “update the database”. I don’t know what is in this database, but it takes FOREVER to update. Case in point, today I tried to do it, and gave up after about 20 minutes. You have to click update, and leave your phone alone, because if you put the app in the background, it will reset and you’ll have to start over the next time you try to use the app. This basically forces you to choose between not using your phone or not using the app, every few weeks or month or however often it gets an updated database. As much as I love the pros of this app, I don’t love it enough to put up with such nonsense.

Very good

Probably the best app on iOS to play various legacy formats. I only have a couple suggestions for future updates. -Setting fade length. A couple of plugins support this but by in large, there isn’t an option to set a fade time, so many tracks just cut out abruptly after they’ve played the selected amount of loops. I’d particularly like this option for vgmstream, but the more the merrier. -WSR (Wonderswan) support. Not a particularly popular format, but there is some good music using this format, and it’s one of the few that I’m not able to play with the app. -FLAC support would also be greatly appreciated. -More consistent updates. VGMStream in particular is updated pretty often, so it would be nice to get an update for the app a little more often. Any UI tweaks to make the player more customizable would be welcome too, but that’s just nitpicking. All in all, this is a very good app that I would recommend and it gets better with every update! Edit 4/27/2021: Pretty much everything I mentioned was added in version 3.0. Much appreciated, and very excited to see whatever’s next!

This has come a long way

Mikestery on

I am so glad for the latest update. With the new update I can finally play all the files I usually do with a different app on a different platform that I used to use. Suffice it to say I am ecstatic at the progress that has been made. I can't wait to see what else is going to come of this. I'm glad that I paid for this a long time ago. I wish there is more I can do for this developer.
