Description

NanoStudio 2 is a powerful music production environment for synthesis, sampling, arranging, editing and mixing. It’s the successor to the original NanoStudio, an app held in high regard by musicians for many years for its usability, quality and productivity.

NanoStudio 2 builds upon the same design principles as its predecessor and introduces a huge range of extra features. An all-new audio engine delivers truly professional sound quality, highly optimized to handle complex projects with large numbers of instruments and effects.

NanoStudio 2 hosts external Audio Unit (AUv3) instruments and audio/MIDI effects. A library of all your AU instruments and presets is maintained so they’re tagged, searchable and just as accessible as NanoStudio’s own internal instruments.

Obsidian is NanoStudio’s built-in synth. It has 3 oscillators with 32 note polyphony and 7 different synthesis methods including analogue, wavetable, FM, multi-saw and phase distortion. It also supports samples and multisamples which may be split by note or velocity. Obsidian has 18 different filter types, including resonant analogue, super clean digital, formant, comb and waveshaping. Nearly every parameter can be modulated via the synth’s 5 envelopes, 5 LFOs and 10 configurable macro controllers, and modulation connections can be assigned with just a few taps. 300 factory patches are supplied with macros set up and ready to go. It’s easy to create your own patches and there are many more professionally produced patches available as IAP.

Slate is NanoStudio’s second built-in instrument, a sample/synthesis-based performance pad which makes it easy to tap out drum beats. Slate comes with 500 quality factory samples ranging from multisampled acoustic drums with natural variations through to cutting-edge electronic percussion and effects. 50 factory kits are include, and it’s easy to construct your own drum kits using the factory samples or your own. Slate can also be used with samples of just about anything: vocals, guitar riffs, synth pads – you name it.

There are powerful editors for song arrangement, MIDI, automation and samples. All share a consistent user interface so you’ll be up to speed with them and making music in no time.

A fully-featured sequencer supports tempo and time signature tracks (including tempo ramps) and Ableton Link.

Everything’s brought together by a mixer with unlimited tracks, track grouping and audio/MIDI sends. Tracks may have an unlimited number of insert effects with 11 built-in effects to choose from including reverb, sidechain compressor/expander, EQ with spectrum analysis, look-ahead limiter, delay, exciter, chorus, flanger and phaser. You can add AU audio/MIDI effects to the chain and use them just like an internal effect.

There are many mixdown options available with quality settings up to 32 bit/96kHz and support for file formats including wav, aiff, ogg and M4A. You can mixdown track stems in a single operation or select just a region of the song - great for resampling.

NanoStudio supports Audiobus and has many options for file sharing via the iOS Files app, Dropbox, AudioShare, iTunes File Sharing, AirDrop, email, WebDAV and importing music from your iTunes library.

Develop your initial musical ideas through to a final master with an intuitive workflow designed to get things done.

Just great!

jpmusique on

Easy to use, great synth with good instruments. Only thing missing for me is to be able to control midi transport from my midi controller. Audio tracks would be a plus,

Best of them all.

This is the app that made me invest in making iOS music.

Great App

DJJuniorPops on

It’s such a great app, well developed, however one thing missing is Audio Tracks, it’s such a let down that this was not added as yet, when this app was release this was a promised by the developer and to date all indication he has not live up to his promise. Such a missing opportunity. Other than that a beautiful app.

Just Great

5 stars without having audio recording tracks. The built in synth would be a top ten auv3 synth on its own, so 5 stars just for the synth. Add audio recording and the icing would be on the cake. I can complain about not having audio recording, but no point because what is there is just so good. Thanks to the dev for such a wonderful app and please add audio recording so I won't need any other DAWs and create a separate app called Obsidian.

Best iOS DAW

nathansnow1983 on

Awesome to work in. Best synth. Best drums. Best piano roll editing. Auv3’s work flawlessly within. Gave it 4.5 stars because it NEEDS AUDIO, without it I believe it will fade away

An excellent successor

I fell in love with the first Nano Studio when I was 12 years old. It was the perfect option for me. I couldn't afford a computer, let alone a fully fledged DAW, but I wanted to make music. Nano Studio accommodated my every need. It taught me everything I needed to know about using a DAW and helped me understand how synthesizers work. The sound design possibilities (albeit somewhat limited by todays standards) were fascinating to me back then. Nano Studio 2 is everything the first one was, and more. The added features such as be able to control Moog's Model D synthesizer like a VST within Nano Studio 2 is something I would have never believed to be possible 10 years ago. This app proves that getting into music production does not need to be a major expense. This app is what Garage Band should have been. This app is beautiful. I cannot thank Blip Interactive for kick starting my passion all those years ago. I don't know where I would be without your hard work.

fun, intuitive and easy to use

lyla the jaguar on

ive been producing music 25 years and played piano extensively before that. this is exactly what ive been waiting for in terms of playing and automating synths and drums to create music. i have it hooked up to an 88 key digital piano and it like a dream sequencer screen if i imagine it as a flagship workstation with the selection of obsidian, slate and the 20 other synths or so i have and external effects plug ins as well. would be nice to automate external apps someday, and if i ever go fully ipad for workflow (currently still finish projects in macbook)- i would love to use this with audio inputs. but hey. for creating instrumentals, this is the most fun i have had since i owned a korg triton way back before i worked with computers. that feeling of infinite sounds, possibilities and what was at the time an incredible sequencer. songs just poured out of me and it is happening again.

Does what it does very well.

Navigation is fantastic. Stability is as good as it gets. The audio routing is sweet and clever. Multiple lanes per track is so useful, Is it a complete ‘all in one’ solution on iOS? Not currently (and nothing is on iOS), but I will have to wait and see. It may certainly be a contender. Wants... -AUfx automation -better macro assignment for AUs -audio tracks with editing features -track freezing It really is a brilliant app just on the brink of stunning glory... hope it gets there.

Taking IOS music production to ANOTHER LEVEL!

RickeLal on

I cant give this daw enough praise. It’s way uunderpriced, i have every major ios daw, cubasis 2, 3, beatmaker 3, gadget, fl, all of them, and there is nothing like this one. I cant even explain it, you just end up finishing your tracks easier, the layout, the piano roll, the editing, everything is so sick. YES there are a couple of missing features, but there isn’t one ios daw that doesn’t have more than just a few missing, and i have faith the missing features will be implemented soon because this developer is honestly a genius. Keep up the good work! Wow, amazing......

Superbe!

This is such a great app to make music on.Obsidian and Slate are fantastic on their own but the possibility of using external audio units make Nanostudio 2 a must have. Totally recommended!
