Yes, nib is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is nib legit?
⚠️ The nib app has poor ratings and negative feedback. Users seem unsatisfied with its performance or features.
We almost left NIB based on a CHOICE shonky award, but the other provider apps are terrible web apps that are almost impossible to use!
NIB app is a joy to use and a true native app that is actually fun! Words that don’t often go together.
Please don’t ever follow the path of others, stay fun and creative.
Trust me HFC and Australian Unity apps are so bland.

App is good. My children’s details incorrect despite phoning to clarify this.
Will never use NIB again.
Once again, their telephone staff have lied regarding my eligibility to claim items. I’m in the process of moving to another provider that actually provides what I want.
Dont bother with this app
Every time I submit a claim through the app I get non descript system responses telling enqhy the claim is rejected. I have not had a single claim approved thru the app. This then necessitates me phoning NIB which the app is designed to avoid.
The call centre is wonderful but perhaps instead of copy paste rejecting claims, explain what is actually needed to make a claim.
Its a waste of time I submit via the app then read the emails puzzle over them then call the call centre to get resolution. HiCAPs is great and call centre great and insurance is pretty good. But the app costs me time and saves none.
The limits also wrong in the past. Causing another call. The app is poorly written and the processes do not resolve member queries in one go.
What exactly does my Extras benefit “Healthy Lifestyle” cover?
Good question because I can’t find it on the App!!

The latest update replaces all the functionality of claiming, reviewing limits, viewing payments with a sort of weird wellness centre that is NOT even required as front and centre page

Your voice system says check App to check limit used but info not available. You also need a simple ability to type in the item number and see if you are covered - A trivial programming action.
