Notebooks – Write and Organize

Documents, Tasks and Files

Published by: Alfons Schmid

Description

Notebooks is a comprehensive writing app with a powerful text and Markdown editor, which you can use as personal Wiki, Zettelkasten, file and document organizer, task manager, PDF/eBook creator and much more—all in one place. You can seamlessly transform quick notes into actionable tasks, combine text fragments into chapters of a book, organize research material, and keep business documents separate from personal diaries without ever switching apps. Stay focused and unleash your creativity with Notebooks’ versatile and intuitive features. - You'll quickly come to appreciate this unique combination of features.
• Notebooks stores all your documents as regular files in standard formats. You are always in control of your documents, never need to worry about how to export them, and they remain compatible across devices and over time.
• Create formatted documents with styles, attachments, tables or checklists, and add a table of contents if you like. Choose between a variation of ready made document styles, or create your own, if you want.
• Write your documents in plain text and allow Notebooks to automatically handle lists, highlight and center the current line on screen, automatically insert closing characters for (, {, [, " and more. - Plain text is a universal format which can be used on any device without any specific software.
• Use Markdown to create formatted documents from plain text. Notebooks supports *MultiMarkdown* and its own flavor of *Discount*. – Click any word in a formatted Markdown text and start writing at that position. You can even create checklists (- [ ]) and tick them off in formatted view. Syntax highlighting and a set of dedicated extra keyboard keys make Markdown editing easy.

• Use your Apple Pencil to sketch ideas or annotate images and PDF documents.
• Use Notebooks' advanced editing capabilities to work on documents which are stored in other apps.
• Compile selected documents or the contents of whole books into a single document, an eBook or a PDF document.
• Link between documents in Notebooks. In Markdown you can even use Wiki style links ([[ ]]). When clicking a link to a document which does not yet exist, Notebooks suggests to create it. And when you move or rename documents, Notebooks makes sure the links remain intact.
• Create as many books as you need to structure your projects and details. Nest books as deep as you like, there is no limit in Notebooks. If you ever loose track, Notebooks' full text search helps you quickly turn up even the most hidden document.
• Turn books into task lists to display document as tasks which can be ticked off. Assign due dates and alerts, and divide projects into nested sub projects, which makes them easier to handle.
• For simple lists you can use checklists in formatted documents and Markdown.
• Assign Context tags to books and documents to create shortcuts that are accessible for a smart book at Notebooks' top level. – Notebooks can even extract context tags from the contents of documents as you create them.
• Import all documents and files you want to keep close at hand, no matter whether PDF, email, web pages, MS Office or iWorks, photos, videos, music and more.
• Scan documents and extract text using OCR (iOS 13)
• Sync files between iPads, iPhones, Mac or PC.
With all these features, Notebooks may quickly become your go-to repository for everything you want to keep close at hand.
User Comments:
“Notebooks is a wonderful App, which is so much better than the dozen other note apps I tried. It is sophisticated, in an unassuming way, so that you find yourself greatly rewarded and being productive without sacrificing time/effort to the App. I cannot tell you how much productivity I have gained. I am having a huge amount of fun, I use it constantly, more than the phone on my iPhone in fact."
“You are GTD in every way that makes it efficient and makes me efficient.”

Notebooks Reviews

Very Impressed

I wanted a simpler (and better looking!) alternative to the excellent DEVONthink, so I revisited Notebooks after 10 years away. Hugely improved and very easy and attractive to use even with nearly 6000 notes and archived docs. I use it as a paperless home office to store all my scanned paperwork and historic documents - as well as current notes and jottings. I have a feeling I’ll find a lot more uses over time!

So slow and buggy it’s not useable

Hangs, crashes, hangs, crashes. Great idea but cannot handle iCloud or large libraries.

Nothing comes close to this app

If you want a super reliable, like a Swiss Army knife among note taking apps, this is the one you should buy, for IOS and Mac. It isn’t often I run out of superlatives, but this app really does cover it all, elegantly and intuitively with everything you need for short and long form writing, including the ability to scan documents to PDF. It is, quite simply, the best word processor I’ve ever used.

I think I have tried and/or bought every notebooks app — with a decent specification — released on the Apple Store in almost two decades. There is only one that does all I want (and probably more than I need) that has remained on my iPad and Mac ever since: Notebooks. The support provided by Alfons would be the envy of most software developers: specific to the issue you describe, rather than the robotic ‘tick box’ reply that makes it clear they haven’t actually read your message, and thus far, effective. I have no links or benefit with the developer, but after suffering a host of apps that, IMO, should never have made it to the App Store, I appreciate a great product that is supported by enviable customer support. If you need a reliable, effective notes application, you need Notebooks.

Outstanding app with one fatal flaw

I love this app! Perfect for making notes and viewing my admittedly quite large collection of years of notes… I would absolutely give this app 5 stars, but i’m unable to do so as I use an external location for my notebook. It’s all stored on a server, which I use a VPN to access. When I enter the notebooks app, I need to reselect my external location each time… The app is never open when I connect to my network, or leave home, when the VPN automatically connects (all my phone’s network traffic goes through it) - If this issue could be fixed, 5 Stars all the way… I plan on keeping my purchase, but hope this issue is looked in to.

Great!

Long term user & the present software is first class. I use it everyday tool. Now I have removed my expensive Evernote account. Very helpful for me to store research & past published articles. 5 star from me!

SO MUCH MORE than a Notes app!

This is an example of a ‘Truly Amazing’ app! Nowadays, there’re so many apps that are just rubbish acting as cool and want to fleece your money from you. Not this one! This is the old school, real deal, great app, great developer, great value and it’s updated with regularity. The amount of different features the app offers is insane! You can write a book, keep account of any number of subjects, if you can imagine it as a writing ‘thing’ you can most likely do it here. An honest, non-greedy developer, who cares about the app and the customers. I see a reply to near all reviews, answers emails quickly. The absolute best of its class, buy with confidence!

Functional, fast search, comprehensive

The only thing really irks me is when I copy multiple docs from another document app they all have the same name; that of the first doc. Anyway thanks for a good programme. David G.

Hidden gem

I’ve used quite a few of these apps, but have only just discovered this one. It’s very well thought out whereas many others seem like “me too” variations. Being able to add items via Finder/Files is fantastic. It adds so many more options for automation. The design is very clean and “Apple”. WebDAV & iCloud is much better than storing on unknown servers. Top marks for privacy. I still have a lot to explore. Looking forward to it. The only thing missing so far is extensions for Firefox/Chrome. I guess one can build them with URL links.

Brilliant app and support
