A reliable workhorse could use improvements for iPad
OmniGraffle is my go-to program for drawing charts and illustrations, since way back. In the iPad version i feel Omni made a strange choice to use the vertical pop up instead of the horizontal (you know the typical copy/paste bar). The former is hampered by drag n drop delays and excess animation, whereas the latter is quick and has no needless animation. The vertical pop up would be more suitable for use at a document or layer level, not for every object in the graph. I’m also hoping to see better support for Bluetooth mouse/magic keypad trackpad. Sometimes it doesn’t work as you’d expect compared with pen/touch.
A very good drawing software
I use OG on both Mac and iPad and I’m really satisfied with both versions. However, last aversion 3.11.1 on iPad seem to be a bit buggy; it’s hard to select shapes in groups, edit texts in groups is extremely hard. Often you get into a situation where you need to ungroup and thereafter do your changes and group it again.
Lacks the things I love in the Mac version
Omnigraffle for iOS completely lacks the features that makes the Mac version great. I have illustrated books with Omnigraffle for the Mac, but that will never happen with the iOS version, unless the missing features are implemented.
On the Mac, Omnigraffle has an outliner and an automatic layout mode that, working together, makes the program the best diagram application I have ever seen, by a wide margin. You enter text using the outliner, and Omnigraffle automatically creates a basic diagram, according to a set of layout rules and a template that you have chosen.
These were the first features I looked for when I had downloaded the iOS version. Turns out the outliner is completely missing, and the automatic layout feature is severely crippled.
The automatic layout feature on the Mac is interactive. The layout is updated as you type in the outliner. In the iOS version, you first have to draw everything manually, using the rather clunky user interface, and then click a button to get Omnigraffle to layout what you have already drawn.
I checked the support forum, both the old and the current, and there have been complaints about the missing outliner since version 1.0 was released.
Without it, creating a diagram takes at least 2-5 times longer than it should. If I want slow and cumbersome, there are plenty of diagramming applications to choose from, and at least some of them are way cheaper.
Oh yes, I almost forgot: The first time I saved a diagram to Google drive and opened it, it went well, but the second time I did it, my changes were lost. It is the first time I have seen an iOS application fail at saving a file. It looks to me like Omnigraffle uploads the file directly to the cloud, without saving a copy locally. That makes it extremely vulnerable to unreliable WiFi connections.
I do not expect an iOS application to have all the features of a Mac application, and there are plenty of features I could do without. The outliner and automated, interactive layout features are not in that category though. They are must haves. Being able to save without losing data is of course just as important.
