Description

Pixaki is a powerful pixel art creation studio for iPad. It features many of the same features found in desktop apps — such as custom canvas sizes, layers, animation, precise colour selection, and customisable palettes — but with a gorgeous multi-touch interface that is just right for iPad.

Whether you’re creating 8-bit game characters or vast isometric cityscapes, Pixaki has the tools you’ll need in an app you’ll love.

// WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

“For our money, Pixaki is the only app worth considering for iPad-related pixel art.” — TechRadar

“It’s a great way to kick back on the couch and create the 8-bit scene of your dreams.” — The Verge

// FOR THE FUTURE OF PIXEL ART.
Pixel art is so much more than just retro. We believe that the best pixel art ever is still being made. By you. That’s why there’s nothing retro about Pixaki. The app is built to take full advantage of the latest features of iOS, and designed for a fantastic experience on iPad and iPad Pro.

// PIXEL OVER YOUR SKETCHES.
Pixaki’s reference layers allow you to import any image from your photo library at full resolution, resize and reposition it on the canvas, then draw pixels over the top. You can even have multiple reference layers at once, and adjust the opacity so that you can draw underneath the image if you prefer.

// ANIMATE.
Pixel art was made to move, and with Pixaki it’s a joy to bring your creations to life. With advanced features such as per-frame duration and colour-shifted onion skinning, nothing can stop you.

// LAYERS.
Supports up to 50 layers per frame. Adjust the opacity of each to easily create lighting and translucency effects. Reordering layers is as simple as drag and drop.

// FULLY CUSTOMISABLE PALETTES.
Pixaki comes with some great palettes pre-installed, but also allows you to create and save your own. Once you’ve saved a palette, you can import it into any document that you’re working on. You can also import palettes you’ve created in other software or downloaded in .aco, .pal, and .gpl formats.

// SHAPES AND LINES.
The line tool makes it easy to create perfectly straight lines, which can optionally be locked to angles used in isometric art. The rectangle and ellipse tools help in creating basic shapes, which can be automatically filled with colour, and the aspect ratio can be locked to create squares and circles.

// POWERFUL COLOUR REPLACEMENT.
It might look like an old bucket, but this is actually a supercharged colour replacement tool. You can use it like a standard bucket tool, or replace all instances of a particular colour with another. This can be configured to affect just the layer you’re working on, all layers of the current frame, or all layers on all frames. Turning on erase mode to removes all pixels of a given colour. It’s a great way to work with limited colour palettes.

// SELECTION.
Cut, copy, paste, move, flip, and rotate anything that you draw with a simple, intuitive interface. Touch and hold the paste icon to quickly tile an area with an image from the clipboard.

// IMPORT AND EXPORT.
Pixaki makes it easy to work with other desktop and mobile apps, as well as output for game engines and social media sharing.

• Photoshop files: Import and export layered PSDs. Export an animation, and the layers for each frame are put into groups.

• Animated GIFs: Import and export animated GIFs. Export supports magnification, perfect for crisp images online.

• Sprite sheets: Perfect for use in your game, with a configurable number of columns. Also supports magnification.

• ZIP archives: Save a PNG of each frame packaged into a ZIP file. Great for game engines and video production.

• PNGs: Export supports nearest-neighbour upscaling for crisp social media sharing.

• Other images: Any image format supported by iOS can be imported into Pixaki — things like TIFFs and even JPEGs (yuck).

• Palettes: Supports Adobe Photoshop’s .aco files, GIMP’s .gpl files, and the JASC .pal format.

Great app.

Jeanmichelnoir on

Really good app. Good fun and the team have excellent customer support. Buy this!

Canvas size is so small

gunnerballz on

Wasted money and now for nothing as the canvas size only goes up to 1024 x 1024

Fantastic app, but could use more work.

Fexaura on

I am really enjoying this app and have no regrets about purchasing it. I do however, think it could use a little attention in terms of how smooth it is to use. It is very easy to accidentally switch colours, linger for more than a second in an area and you’ll have dabbed that colour instead, including the grey starting back ground. I find I need a barrier between my hand and my screen, as it is too easy to accidentally add an extra pixel. A lasso tool, symmetry and something to count how many pixels you have in a straight line, as mentioned by other reviewers, would also be extremely beneficial to this app and something I’d love to see added in the future. While I am having great fun with this app at the moment, these few little niggles are interrupting my flow. Once these points are addressed, the app will be perfect!

Needs a bit more

xKrazoa on

This app doesn’t feel like it’s worth £20. I’m sorry but it doesn’t support clipping masks, there’s no colour wheel. Lasso tool is missing too. This app has a lot of potential and the fact it supports so many file formats is what really drew me to it. I’ll probably use it as an exporting tool but I doubt I’ll use it for anything more at the moment.

Good but

Kate1497 on

Would love a colour wheel and the ability to group layers

Good app but highly overpriced.

Konrad_BAts on

Good app in general and can cover some of the basic needs, for £5 I’d rate it on 4-5, but for over £20 you’d expect it to cover the professional needs. For less than this you have Procreate or Affinity Designer and they’re complex, powerful designing apps (just not strictly designed for pixel art). In Pixaki is a lack of some very important tools like: - lasso - free rotation for selected objects - distort selected objects - more manipulation for reference layers - canvas rotation during drawing - gradient map - colour wheel for colour selection - more preset shapes like triangles, hexagons etc - different brushes for bigger artworks like opening screens for games etc. - more visible layers on the animation toolbar (it would help with animating characters and different parts of their bodies) - managing palettes is really frustrating as I can’t just simply create a blank one and keep up saving changes to it, everytime I add a new colour I must save it as new palette (seriously?) - set up palette as default for all projects option - more control for gestures (the most annoying for me is double tap apple pencil to open/close side toolbar, I can’t even disable it or change) For this insanely high price developers should set up a discount until the app is completed or start from a way smaller amount. Hopefully more tools, options and usability are going to be added in the near future as there’s definitely potential in Pixaki to be a really great app. Kind Regards Konrad

Almost perfect

N.Redheart on

This is a brilliant app for any pixel artist, it supports many of the features you need to create and animate pixel art efficiently. It even allows you to export your work as a sprite sheet! Drawing tools include the pencil, eraser, paint bucket, selection (which includes mirroring, cloning and transform), shape and eye dropper. You can set the frame rate for animation playback and clone existing frames. I was really happy to see that onion skinning was also included. A few other nice additions include a button that lets you see the true size of your drawing while held down, and a customisable grid. The one essential feature that’s missing is a symmetry tool that would help you in creating seamless tiles, but hopefully this gets added in the future. If you’re a developer or artist that’s seeking a program to help you create assets on the go, or if you just want to draw pixel art because you love it I highly recommend this app!

Perfect for commutes + in bed

Ayrton 'chonky boi' Totten on

Loving this, keeping me productive during my commute - small request, I do a lot of precise geometry and when drawing lines with the line tool it would be great to see how many pixels long the line I’m drawing is so I’m not ‘eyeballing’ symmetric components. Appreciate you might have your hands full with the iOS 13 beta support, would be happy to plug this app to all my colleagues with that one nifty feature 😇

Give me rotation and I give you 5 stars!

DonJoe992 on

To the developer: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me pixel rotation like in Aseprite! You do that and this becomes the definitive pixel art app! Would be great to have also pixel perfect and shading To the others: great app, is it worth the price? If the developer implements what I said above HELL YEAH. Right now it’s great but could be perfect.

Amazing Pixel App

Joshyface on

I have tried many pixel apps for my artwork and game development projects, and this is the easiest one of the bunch to produce my work with. The creator is very helpful with any issues, and I am very thankful for his help with fixing a corrupt file I had. I would love it if the canvas could be rotated - I am not sure if this is something which is in the pipeline to be added, or not, but it is a minor thing which does not hinder my love for the app. If you are after a pixel app, then I highly recommend Pixaki - it is worth every penny!
