Description

Pixaki is a powerful pixel art creation studio for iPad. It features many of the same features found in desktop apps — such as custom canvas sizes, layers, animation, precise colour selection, and customisable palettes — but with a gorgeous multi-touch interface that is just right for iPad.

Whether you’re creating 8-bit game characters or vast isometric cityscapes, Pixaki has the tools you’ll need in an app you’ll love.

// WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

“For our money, Pixaki is the only app worth considering for iPad-related pixel art.” — TechRadar

“It’s a great way to kick back on the couch and create the 8-bit scene of your dreams.” — The Verge

// FOR THE FUTURE OF PIXEL ART.
Pixel art is so much more than just retro. We believe that the best pixel art ever is still being made. By you. That’s why there’s nothing retro about Pixaki. The app is built to take full advantage of the latest features of iOS, and designed for a fantastic experience on iPad and iPad Pro.

// PIXEL OVER YOUR SKETCHES.
Pixaki’s reference layers allow you to import any image from your photo library at full resolution, resize and reposition it on the canvas, then draw pixels over the top. You can even have multiple reference layers at once, and adjust the opacity so that you can draw underneath the image if you prefer.

// ANIMATE.
Pixel art was made to move, and with Pixaki it’s a joy to bring your creations to life. With advanced features such as per-frame duration and colour-shifted onion skinning, nothing can stop you.

// LAYERS.
Supports up to 50 layers per frame. Adjust the opacity of each to easily create lighting and translucency effects. Reordering layers is as simple as drag and drop.

// FULLY CUSTOMISABLE PALETTES.
Pixaki comes with some great palettes pre-installed, but also allows you to create and save your own. Once you’ve saved a palette, you can import it into any document that you’re working on. You can also import palettes you’ve created in other software or downloaded in .aco, .pal, and .gpl formats.

// SHAPES AND LINES.
The line tool makes it easy to create perfectly straight lines, which can optionally be locked to angles used in isometric art. The rectangle and ellipse tools help in creating basic shapes, which can be automatically filled with colour, and the aspect ratio can be locked to create squares and circles.

// POWERFUL COLOUR REPLACEMENT.
It might look like an old bucket, but this is actually a supercharged colour replacement tool. You can use it like a standard bucket tool, or replace all instances of a particular colour with another. This can be configured to affect just the layer you’re working on, all layers of the current frame, or all layers on all frames. Turning on erase mode to removes all pixels of a given colour. It’s a great way to work with limited colour palettes.

// SELECTION.
Cut, copy, paste, move, flip, and rotate anything that you draw with a simple, intuitive interface. Touch and hold the paste icon to quickly tile an area with an image from the clipboard.

// IMPORT AND EXPORT.
Pixaki makes it easy to work with other desktop and mobile apps, as well as output for game engines and social media sharing.

• Photoshop files: Import and export layered PSDs. Export an animation, and the layers for each frame are put into groups.

• Animated GIFs: Import and export animated GIFs. Export supports magnification, perfect for crisp images online.

• Sprite sheets: Perfect for use in your game, with a configurable number of columns. Also supports magnification.

• ZIP archives: Save a PNG of each frame packaged into a ZIP file. Great for game engines and video production.

• PNGs: Export supports nearest-neighbour upscaling for crisp social media sharing.

• Other images: Any image format supported by iOS can be imported into Pixaki — things like TIFFs and even JPEGs (yuck).

• Palettes: Supports Adobe Photoshop’s .aco files, GIMP’s .gpl files, and the JASC .pal format.

Good but missing some features

Ombadiya on

For the price I expected a bit more, missing features such as magic wand and lasso selection, layer names, brush shape, alpha lock, layer modes. Animating in the app is great, and the 2:1, 1:2 line locks are great for isometric art. Really hoping they add a few of the missing features, at least a magic wand selection and selection inversion.

Very user friendly, crashes a lot.

This app has been great for a newbie like myself. Very intuitive and easy to figure out. Using some of the features takes some getting used to, but once you have it down works great. Try the free trial. I am purchasing the app in hopes to help fund some future needed updates. Thanks devs!

Needs more features for the price

RachelPopa on

I like this app, but it desperately needs more features to be truly productive and worth the cost. Other apps have this: * A magic wand tool to draw around part of an image and select it. This app only lets you select squares. * The ability to play a sub-selection of frames in an animation. * The ability to select multiple files for sharing. It’s annoying that after making a bunch of sprites I have to upload them one at a time. * Also it crashes pretty regularly

Missing some features, but still good

Came from aesprite on desktop. Good overall, but missing tools that other reviews have commented on. Some obvious ones like resizing for example. Also compared to aesprite cost is really high...

Satisfied with app but it could have more features

camelprint on

For the price of around $40 it's a bit on the pricey end of things, but Pixaki is easy and intuitive to use. I wish there were features like magic wand/smart selection options, and more layering options for animation sequences (or the ability to group layers into sets). It seems kind of clunky right now for animation purposes, but I think the actual drawing experience is pleasant. As well it seems to glitch every now and then for me - minor things, like the eyedropper tool not disappearing from the screen despite not using it, or hand gestures + use of apple pencil accidentally triggering stray pixels. Nothing quitting out of the app and then re-entering did not solve, however. I know the developers are hard at work in pushing out new updates so I look forward to them.

Really great but..

LaGrossePistache on

It’s a great pixel art app but it’s missing some tools to make the workflow better.. no magic wand to select, no size display when you try to select an area, can’t give a name to layer to keep it clean. It think it’s a little bit expensive but i hope they will add some features with the next updates! Still.. it is really awesome to use this app to make beautiful pixel art !

Great but needs some work

Gramorgan on

This is a fantastic product, but it needs some work. Way too many crashes for the cost. Realistically, similar crashing as Procreate.

Great program I really love it

TamásC on

I recommend trying the free one first, it definitely sold me on it! Works great to make animated sprites, etc. Allows overlays of photos if you need some reference. Recommended for any pixel artist / game developer etc! My only wish would be the ability to use the colour picker on the reference layer! Thanks to the dev!

Amazing!

CorCor2123 on

I credit this app for so many breakthroughs in the creation of characters and assets for my own game creations . It's a tool that a professional can use. It has all the features you need , but not too many to overwhelm you. I use this product constantly in the creation of my assets. It really is a professional tool. The customer support is also amazing. When I find a feature isn't there or something isn't up to my standards , the app creator is usually pretty accommodating at eventually working in those features or fixing any bugs I find. This is simply the best pixel art program you can get! Highly highly recommend it!
