Useful but slowly losing functionality

LOONA_DES on

I use this over YouTube watch later and playlists but it’s lost its drag and drop functionality, unless that’s been moved to the paid tier. Adding multiple videos has thus become much harder. I’ll probably end up going back to YouTube watch lists as a result.

Desktop app is slow

jml_oottffss_ on

Let me preface this by saying I have 600+ subs on YouTube. The desktop app is slow and confusing. First, importing from YouTube is slow. That’s fine, but there is no progress bar, and it just slowly chugs along. Next, you have to go into the Channels list to actually move the videos you want to watch. Which is annoying because the channels window is slow. Horribly slow. Scrolling through the Channel list is jittery at best. There is no way to easily manage that list, either. No way to filter just the channel list. And the channel inbox filter/search box is slow. Type in a letter, and you are waiting… spinning wheel of death. 30 seconds later, still waiting. And it freezes up everything, so now you are stuck waiting. And when you select a video, again, the entire thing freezes up. It’s frustrating. So many places where the UI just hangs. Oh.. more than a minute later, my search from before? Yeah, now it’s unfrozen. I can type the next letter. I selected a video in the Channels Inbox. And…. Waiting. Spinning wheel of death. Some 30+ seconds later it unfreezes. It has done nothing as far as I can see. It’s still selected. Oh, no… I was wrong… This app was so hyped, but I can’t believe anyone really put this through the paces. Also, the video I selected? Yeah… after about 60 seconds, it changes to the next video below it? This is still ALL just in the channel inbox. So, we are just trying to review which videos we want to schedule to watch. Oh… again! It magically changed the selection again! I’m literally in this window typing out a review, and the app just did it’s own thing without me touching it. So no. if you are anything beyond a casual user of YouTube, stay away. The YouTube website *with* ads is faster. I’m on an M1 Max with 32 GB of memory.

Great app

By using Play, I’m doing less endless browsing and scrolling on YouTube and getting better focus on the channels and playlists I add to the app. I especially appreciate the smart folders and searches auto-tagging and filtering added videos. I try to empty my unwatched videos folder daily by only saving videos that I plan to watch. By using Play, I’m also avoiding a lot of the noise and clutter on YouTube. Thanks for this app.

Awesome with little but…

Have to give 4 stars just so they can do small improvements, app does what it promises. One update i wish is - you need to close / open app in order to refresh iCloud Sync. It’s annoying if you’re watching something, and adding something into your feed, it would not show up unless you close the app and reopen. Please add some type of Sync button.

No sync

Francola on

A beautiful app that I wish I could use, but it will not sync to your other devices by using the share sheet etc. you must open the actual app afterwards to have the sync work.

Great app, but...

This is a well made and useful app, and I'm definitely a fan of the dev (MusicHarbor and MusicBox are FANTASTIC). But... after reviewing my subscriptions, I realized this is one of the most expensive subscriptions I have and the value add just isn't there imo. Play is double what I pay yearly for my podcast app, triple the cost of my photo backup app, and only $5 less than the app I use to remotely manage my computer. The functionality gained vs the yearly cost just doesn't make sense (for me). The one time cost of purchasing the app is well worth it, but I'm opting to let my subscription expire for the time being. I hope to see more features added in the future that justify the subscription cost.

Greedy monetization

StayUber on

United States

For some reason the developer has decided that paying $3 for the app is not enough to actually get the full functionality of the app. You will be required to also purchase a $20/yr subscription. Pick one strategy, freemium and subscription or paid app. Makes no sense. Will be reaching out to Apple for a refund. Not worth a yearly subscription imo

Can't rave enough.

I can't rave enough about this app. I've moved all of my video consumption to Play on mobile and desktops, because it just does it right. New features added all the time to improve upon something that is already great. I don't really buy many apps or even do subs, but I could not miss this.

Good

Some things that would make this a compelling alternative YouTube experience is a search feature (searching YouTube) and playback quality defaults (1080p,720p,360p). I feel like I might be missing this setting, but I wish there were various views and per-tag layout settings (like choosing a thumbnail grid for certain tags). A game-changing feature would be if this had a "podcast" setting/player, which could play a selection of videos audio-only to save data. Perhaps this could work almost like a "tag" to set certain added links to display and be played as an audio-only digest.

A Dream App

K. Maxx on

United States

Not crazy about this. A lot of manual work involved. I’m a YouTube junkie but even transferring a small amount of data took much energy and time. There’s also a bit of dishonest marketing here… First, this app is most optimal on the desktop/iPad (with updated iOS systems) rather than your phone because you can’t otherwise upload multiple playlists, efficiently anyway. Secondly, the app’s most useful feature of seeing new videos from your favorite channels is behind an additional paywall of $20/yr, or $3 monthly. So at bare minimum what you end up with, after buying entry into the app, is a library manager for already saved content with no fresh feed updates. What I desired most when downloading this was help managing my YT library but this is too isolated from the YT app to actually help with that. I’d have to go back and forth to update it and where’s the fun in that? I do respect this app though, as its one of a kind in YT video management, and is certainly sincere about what it offers. I just need a bit more from it to maximize my video watching time and initial data transfer. *********************************************** Developer notes for improvement: This app could really hike up its organizational features. MORE FRILLS, please. At the very least, the landing page should be centered around the latest vids from one’s channels (instead of going to a separate tab). It would be cool if the tags were called playlists since that’s what I imported them as. I also don’t know why the playlist name isn’t imported (more manual labor)! And, pleeeeease, it would be great to add a feature to mass import playlists… even if it’s just 5-10 at a time. I like the video notes feature but think it should be more prominently placed (maybe at the bottom where you can see the full text?) Also, a ‘like’ button perhaps instead of just a star rating system? Video topic tags should also be somehow auto-added from YouTube, especially since genre sections would be most sublime to put on the landing page, too. I also can’t tell whether I’ve watched the video on YT already. I suspect this requires access to my YT account (which you guys say apps aren’t authorized to do) but it was still a bummer to see my imported playlist and not see at glance what I’d already watched (…is there no way to access my watched history?) I would also like to know why a video fails to upload with playlist import. It currently doesn’t say which ones or why. In the ‘New from Creator,’ could you create
