Description

This award-winning app is the one to get if you are passionate about your child learning to read, and your child is aged between 4 and 6, or older but needs some extra help with reading.

It teaches phonics and handwriting (including joined up). It has a first set of storybooks for them to read, written specifically for children learning to read using the app.

Your child will prefer our books to paper books, because they help them read - if they get stuck, they tap a word to get help sounding it out. You will prefer our books, because the quizzes check they can read the words and understand them.

The books get progressively harder, but kids don’t realise because they are getting better at reading all the time.

Our apps are used in hundreds of American elementary schools. One of only nine education apps awarded the top A+ rating by Balefire Labs.

The app is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Children master these skills:

* writing letters
* recognising 72 letter sounds (e.g. ‘ch’ are the letters that make the initial sound in ‘chat’)
* blending letter sounds together to make words (e.g ‘ch-a-t’)
* hearing a word and selecting its written form (e.g. the app says, “chat”, the child has to select ‘chat’ from a group of words - some of which are similar to chat)

Parents and teachers can easily monitor children’s progress online. They can see what stage the child is at, any letter sounds they are having difficulty with and what storybooks have been read. They are also emailed a certificate when a child completes a task. These certificates are a much-loved feature of the original PocketPhonics app, which launched in 2008 and has been downloaded over half a million times.

Teachers don't need to worry about making sure kids have the same iPad each lesson. If a child switches iPads, they automatically continue learning from where they finished previously.  Children can use the app at home, and continue from where they left off at school.

Order the app's FREE GUIDE to teaching kids to read to understand how it teaches.

Phonics (letter sounds) help children to read by understanding the sounds that letters make. The National Reading Panel concluded that “children who have phonics instruction read better and spell better than other children”.

Montessori & other experts recommend not including letter names when teaching letter sounds.

Great in Every Way

Kandy Speech Therapist on

As a speech pathologist, I’ve known many children who had difficulty learning to read because they lacked phonemic awareness- the concept that words are made up of individual sounds. That concept of sounds you say and hear (regardless of written letters) needs to be strong in order for sound- letter teaching to make sense. This app does a stellar job of focusing on the sounds-in-words concept as they gradually ease in the associated letters. With the addition of activities of simple writing and “reading a book” right away, I find the whole experience to be right on target. I also appreciate that there’s not all the extended bells and whistles going off for every correct input. I think that many apps overdo the right answer reward. Though the app is for children, it’s not overly babyish and I recently showed Pocket Phonics to an adult who is a beginning reader and he was intrigued and pleased to work on it. Great app!

Great app

My dyslexic first grader is really frustrated in school but loves this app. He actually likes learning from it. Thank you!

This app is amazing for my kids

Megalotto on

This app is amazing for my kids they are learning so well. It’s sticks and they remember it. Most of all the stories aren’t dry and boring my kids love the stories that are included. I would have given 5 stars but the only thing I haven’t seen yet are words like “take like made Pete note” silent “e” words maybe My kids haven’t gotten there but I don’t see it.

Disappointed

Dragonherder on

There is a bug in the story section that causes the ap to shut down. The update that has been provided, I am guessing to fix this, doesn't load. Very disappointing because up until recently, this seemed like a great tool to teach reading. Add three stars if they fix the updated version to load.

Another HIT!

Grandma/teacher on

I teach kindergarten students to read. This app is the best one for teaching them letter sounds, letter writing, building words with letter sounds, and blending sounds. I believe this approach produces the best results! (There is research proving it, too.) Also, my students just beam with delight when they finish a level and earn a new certificate! Thank you! Oh, this app's price might seem high, but actually it is a bargain. How much would a one-on-one tutor cost? How much would beginning reader books cost? Also, there is great support if you ever need it!

Great app

My 4 year old loves it and I like that he is learning.

I use this app with my early school- aged tutoring students. It dovetails well with my traditional phonics based curriculum. The students see it as " reward time" while it reinforces the lessons we have just completed.

Love It!!

My 4 year old & my 7 year old (with special needs) just started using this App & we love it!!!. My 4 yea old is recognizing letters & now due to the app sounding out lots of new words. My 7 year old who was not reading has progressed through words & 5 stories, this is a huge accomplishment for him and has really built up his confidence during our reading time. I am so glad we are able to use this app for our boys. It’s fun, engaging, & well researched. I’m a huge fan of phonic based literacy initiatives & after reading the literature and experiencing the app it is all that and more. A must for home or school use!
