Shards of Infinity Reviews
Wish it Worked
I wish I could give this game 5 stars.
I have been playing this game addictively for the past few months, but recently it has stopped working. Every time I load the game it crashes as soon as I press the play online button or try to create an offline game. I have tried reinstalling it, but still nothing.
I have an iPhone 7plus so maybe my old phone is part of the problem?
I hope the developers fix it. Such a fun game.
Well balanced reskin of Ascension
Deck building dueler that you can play in 3 - 5 minutes. Many strategies are possible. I will say that it seems like if you fail to get a wraithe card that trashes undesirable cards from your deck, you can get completely destroyed. Also it seems like part of the game is missing since you claim a hero from one of four factions at the start but every hero plays exactly the same. Also, at 10.99, it’s well above the market average for premium iOS games. Medium ai is too easy, hard is cruel but beatable. More fine grained levels of difficulty would be appreciated. I will be getting the expansion when it releases. 4 stars
Update: a couple months later: this game feels incomplete, like it is missing counter strategies. It is common for the winner to be winning in damage and shard count at once. Runaway winner problem. There is absolutely huge draw luck. Some cards are really overpowered for the cost, such as the 3 cost green that procs a force discard machine on your opponent, and has draw a card and three armor to boot. Another one is the machine that costs 3, gives 1 gem each turn plus chance to immediately put a purchased machine in play. These cards do too much for the cost. Purple feels like you couldn’t succeed by specializing. At least you can play a complete game in under 3 minutes. Three stars. Oct 2019
long-term play value
For their other game, RFTG, which I’ve played >1500 games, I see myself doing the same for Shards of Infinity (SOI). I hope to see the same frequency of game expansions releases. As of today, RFTG is at 4 expansions with one more in the works. From what I see, there is one expansion in the works for SOI.
The games are speedy and short 4-9 minutes - perfect for a quick game here and there on the road or in transit. So far I’m hitting a 50% win rate against medium. And like the RFTG, the AI at hard is, well, hard.
Online playing has the same familiar interface as RFTG (if not easier) and works like a charm - be it with the online community or with your friends.
And yes, like RFTG, SOI originally is a physical tabletop game that plays much faster in the electronic format and so online playing with friends - even in the same house at the same table together is preferred since we can cram 3X more games in the same time period.
So, what is SOI? A dash of Dominion (buy cards to build your deck), a drop of MTG (win by bringing opponent hit point down to zero - not by victory points), and fast forward about 20 centuries. There are multiple paths to victory and each player begins at an identical footing (unlike RFTG, where the random draw determines your starting world, stats, and starting cards.)
Great version of a great game
My friends and I get a lot of mileage out of the tabletop version and the app is every bit as fun to play. AI provides a solid challenge and pass-and-play works like a treat. Highly recommended!
So far, so good.
So I’ve been playing quite a bit since this was released, and my initial impression.... It’s very good. It takes the best parts of Hearthstone, mixes them with the familiarity and gameplay of Ascension, and ends up feeling a bit like what Star Realms should have been. It’s very good.
Needs expansion
Great game and solid app, but we need the expansion which is long overdue.
AI needs to play smarter at high Gems
This is a faithful reproduction of the card game, and the graphics are beautiful.
What is disappointing is the AI players fail to attack a runaway leader. For example, if 3 players are hovering at 10 gems and one is above 20, the AI players don’t start attacking the 20+ gems player. They carry on, attacking whatever player or players they previously attacked. If they hit the runaway leader, they will split their attack with another player (AI or Human) rather than focusing on the runaway leader.
Otherwise, really like the game.
Awesome game
Shards is a great game that is fun and interactive. I love that I can play with my buds online
Issues with App
I love this game and have been playing for years now. Unfortunately, the app does log you out with error messages accessing the server often. Things that would enhance this app would be the ability prompt other players to take their turn or an option to extend the game if all players agree because a lot of times opponents time out or have time expire. Some pre written messages to other players would also be a fun add as long as they are scripted/not negative.
Awesome Game
I play this game a ton. Wish there were the other expansions to play as well. Haven’t had issues with bugs on my iPhone.
It would be nice to be able to say who goes first when playing the computer.
