Terminology Dictionary Reviews

Nothing dishonest in this app

Eric Grey on

United States

This app is exactly as advertised. Nothing too fancy, everything works. For anyone concerned about a review here that claims the definitions are somehow biased, I can guarantee you that this will not impact you in the slightest. Definitions appear every bit as clear and useful as any other similar source. Perfect app for what it is.

Outstanding. Subscriptions?

Whenever I use an incredibly useful app like this that doesn’t have a subscription model, I get a bit nervous, as I believe developers can’t afford to maintain an app indefinitely and effectively for free. So here’s a vote for the opportunity to help subsidize Terminology’s development.

I’ve used this app for years, and it’s great

best app of its kind

been using this app since version 1.0 – in fact, I was their first customer believe it or not. for this reason, I thought it would be unethical to post a review since I had an unfair advantage over most people: I’ve been able to use this app a lot longer than them and therefore would have more to say about it. as you can tell, it’s very difficult to write a meaningful review anymore. the whole notion defies logic these days. so here’s the deal: you can try this app out and see if it does what you hope it can do, or just walk away now and forget about it entirely. whatever you do—

Very possibly the best dictionary app on the platform... still.

Depending on your purpose for a dictionary app, this is the best one on iOS. I use mine to both look up established words and store words I’ve “created.” A lot of the words I want to store come from @HaggardHawks on Twitter, and most of them are both 1.) actual words, often from history and 2.) not in any established dictionaries. These do not show up in apps like LookUp, which will leave you plumb out of luck. Terminology, however, lets me store definitions/other information for “new” words via its “notes” function. To be honest, I can’t imagine moving through life and not creating my own words from time to time, but I understand we’re all different. If you’re a Drafts user, I would consider Terminology an absolute must-have. It took me five minutes to establish actions on both apps which allow me to lookup selected words with a keyboard shortcut (⇧D) from the former instantly in the latter and - with a single tap - return definitions, synonyms, and antonyms to a new draft. It’s wonderful, absolutely indispensable, and fun!
