The Irish Times News Reviews

Shockingly bad app - Irish Times should be ashamed

RoyersLIX on

Ireland

This app has always been poor and buggy, but today I can’t access anything on it, despite rebooting my iPad, deleting the app and data and downloading and logging in again. How can a publication that considers itself Ireland’s premium newspaper stand over such a garbage app for so many years? Is the developer a friend of somebody senior at the IT? This app seems to also reflect the decline in the quality of the paper itself, which now seems to be more a collection of articles by the same journalists repeating their known views over and over again. The Irish Independent, a paper I once loathed, has far more actual news.

Barely functional

irlpaulmc on

Ireland

2 stars because it works. Kind of. - if you lose internet connectivity the story you are reading will abruptly disappear with a black “lost connection” screen. When connectivity is restored you are punted back to the homepage. There is zero reason for either of these infuriating behaviours. - when you click another story from the story you are reading (and so on) there is no shortcut to return to the homepage. You must press back repeatedly depending on how many stories you read Considering a large number of users are paying subscribers you would think they would invest a small amount in having an app that works properly.

App doesn’t work on iPad

Aonghus McD on

Ireland

My mother has a slightly older iPad which she only used for the Irish times. The new update has essentially bricked the app. Which now does not open at all and there is no way to go backward. It says in the app description that it is still compatible with her iOS. She has a paid subscription and no way of accessing it

App keeps asking to accept user preferences

Phn000 on

Ireland

This app just keeps asking you to accept user preferences every time you open a page. I have an account and have the settings saved but it keeps popping up

Evolving but in the wrong direction

The Aerial Photographer on

Ireland

I’m a longtime user and this has been my goto news app, and has been perfectly okay up until they decided to “upgrade” it! And even then it can have teething issues to be resolved through updates. For me it has become a clunky, unreliable, unfriendly user app, and this weekend it won’t even open. Everything else on my phone works perfectly. And they increased the subscription charges for this! Time to call it a day….

Home button

Thomas J Shlug on

Ireland

Very frustrating to navigate. If I have to get to Home after reading a few articles, the quickest way back is to close down and app and re-open. AI audio narrator is really useful though.

Shockingly bad

Goonendoof on

Ireland

As a paying subscriber I’m really frustrated with how bad this is. It should be incredibly simple. I switched back to just using a browser on mobile but they’ve made the logged in sessions incredibly short there now for some reason. I can not emphasise enough how much I hate this app. It’s made navigation frustrating in ways I couldn’t have even imagined.

Awful app

Memailer on

Ireland

Awful app which is difficult to use. Make it almost impossible to cancel.

It does not work

Rob the Rover on

Ireland

I undated the app and now after flashing up with the opening screen it closes down again. If I use an internet browser to get to Irish times it allows me read a story and then when I log I. It crashes. Looks like it the end of the road. I would give no stars but the review requires them so this is overrated. The app information says it is compatible with my iPad so looks like I will be cancelling soon

Something wrong with cookie settings

Shin-IRL on

Ireland

Cookie settings keep popping up every time the app is opened. Incredibly annoying and needs to be fixed.
