Description

Welcome to the most detailed travel guide for overland travel in Africa. This offline app offers a great map and huge amount of detailed places of interest for planning your next safari. Your GPS location will ensure you stay orientated while using the app on your self-drive trip.

Try it out

The app contains samples of the map and guide information, which can be upgraded to full country maps and guides.

How does it work?

This is not a routing/navigation app. The app aims to bring you offline access (i.e. no internet connection required) to the following:
• A detailed map of the country or region you purchase. The country map roughly corresponds to a 1:1 000 000 paper map in terms of its detail and will allow you to view the map at different zoom levels. The map works similar to a web map with the difference being that all information is installed on your device. It contains place names like cities, towns and villages together with a detailed road and track network. It also shows you all protected areas such as national parks and game reserves together with relevant background data such as rivers, mountains and major attractions.
• A detailed guide with the following categories: Places (cities, towns, etc), Attractions & Activities, Parks, Scenic, Camps, Lodging, Food & Drink, Fuel, Shopping, Services and More (miscellaneous points of interest). The guide information is linked to a location on the map and will display as a pin on the map for you to know where it is in reference to where you are.

The app will display a map of the country or region and allow you to switch on different categories of points of interest. You can also search for specific places by name. The map search is location sensitive, i.e. results will be relative to the centre of the map.
Your position, determined from your iPhone or iPad’s location service, will display on the map so you can accurately orientate yourself on the map. As you drive, your location will update on the map so you always know where you are. (iPhone or iPad with GPS required)

The search functionality is linked to the guide categories. For example, if you need to find a campsite, simply switch on the Camps category. Immediately all campsites around you will display on the map and you can click on them for more information. Otherwise, if you know the name of a campsite, enter it into the search block and relevant results will be filtered.

What kind of information can you expect?

Apart from the categories already mentioned, points of interest will have associated information such as a description, contacts details, facilities and activities and some places will have photos. Have a look at the sample data in the free app to get an idea of what we offer.

What about updates?

Guide and Map content is updated once a quarter, and available for download if you have purchased the relevant guide.

EXCELLENT but needs work

Alistair.Flood on

Has an app for navigating around off-road tracks in southern Africa this is definitely bees knees! sure it doesn’t have a navigate button nor do you get everything included for free but must buy the individual country capsules which let’s face it as so cheap that it’s incredible! Where it does come into its own and where it’s in valuable is it detailed maps of tiny sand type tracks ……. if you have it on and you come to over let’s say Y junction and you’re not sure which way to go follow one and the little blue dot moves with you and within 100 m it’s so detailed you can tell whether they’re on the correct track or not ! The search-ability is arguably lacking but to my mind is main downfall is that it doesn’t work with Apple CarPlay. More and more vehicles have CarPlay and it would be invaluable if we could display the app on a larger screen rather than be limited to the size of our phone.

Doesn’t do what it claims to

Bought the full Africa map. Doesn’t work. Search function? Nope doesn’t recognise anything. None of the icons at the bottom work, no campsites, fuel stops, etc. nada. Was going to use their maps in a Garmin for navigation for my Africa trip, but if they can’t even get a basic offline map to work then I will look elsewhere.

Don’t believe the other reviews, this is a life saver!

Don’t believe the other reviews - this app is totally invaluable where Google maps doesn’t work. It was a life saver for me in Botswana. They are right you can’t plan routes etc. by the GPS tracking is totally accurate and it shows even the smallest sand tracks. One of the best things was it has all the campsites and fuel stops detailed, including phone numbers (which is great as a lot of places don’t have websites). Would absolutely recommend

Very basic functionality

The developers do disclose it’s not a navigation app, but really is this the 1990s? No navigation, not CarPlay compatible. Map appears to be static, so doesn’t even move as you drive through it. T4A can surely do better for what they charge - I've spent £15 for South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

£10

Useless waste of £10

Can’t read it. Awful user experience

imclean on

The fonts are so large they cover all the roads making the maps completely useless. Don’t waste your time, you will only get upset at how bad someone can deliver a potentially good experience by providing you with a sub standard, non thought out and dated product.

TERRIBLE APP!

Tige2021 on

This app puts to shame the T4A maps brand. And look at the insane pricing!!!!! It's is a total mess. Completely unintuitive and the cheap and nasty map background doesn't change as you zoom in. E.g. I was trying to look at Victoria Falls (quite a major Town for people using this app) and it's completely covered by a giant 'R" (from Victoria) so no streets and corresponding data is useable. Seriously!!! Their navigator app is also ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE TO USE!!! T4A need to sack their app guy, or leave apps alone until they can produce something which doesn't damage the brand.

Poor version compared with Garmin equiv map

Paydirt61 on

Garmin version from T4A has great depth and is routable, fantastic product. IPhone version cannot be drilled down to a fraction of the detail, and as advertised-is not routable, a very weak product in comparison.
