Could be better

Alan Tyson on

It is a good dictionary that could be a lot better. It is for advanced users very comprehensive in its meanings and examples. But this strength is also it's weakness because of its poor layout in that it only uses one column and so you can pick a word and get numerous meaning and examples that go on for pages. It should use the normal layout for a dictionary and use two columns. The left column for the header word and the right column for meanings and examples allowing you to quickly move onto an adjacent word. It is not for beginners, there is no sound and the layout needs to improve as above, and yet it has a great feature for beginners in that it takes verb conjugations and tells you which verb it comes from. Eg type in parlo and be told it comes from parlare, this feature needs to go one step further and say which particular conjugation it comes from. A minor improvement, when the text size is increased please also increase the search text size.

So many gaps - don't buy it

Schnarlos on

This was such an expensive purchase I was really hoping for a lot more. It is missing so many important words. The example that just spurred me to write this review: It does not give a translation for "early" but it has one for "early riser": mattuntina. That is ridiculous. It can't be that hard to get the basic content of a dictionary up to scratch. They have had many opportunities to provide an update of the word list but haven't bothered. Lazy rip-off merchants I say. I wrote this in September 2009, and have updated it in October 2010 and March 2011. There have been updates to improve the interface, but nothing to fix the gaps in the dictionary itself. It's basically an expensive low quality word list and gives you no help when it comes to synonyms. The verb tables are pretty useful, but nowhere near enough to justify the rip-off price.

Don't buy- disappointing

Carol holt on

Bought this app in march 10- not overly impressed with search facility - however thought new update would help-however now app won't work at all!! There are better apps which are much cheaper and which work!!!

Good, but too expensive for my liking

chilli-paneer on

The first version of this had some usability issues in my opinion. They were fixed in the update. 1. The addition of a back arrow, allowing the user to back track, rather than having to re-input info, to get back to where they were. 2. Moving the Eng -> Ita / Ita -> Eng toggle button, so it's not so close to the text input box (preventing very annoying accidental toggling) There are some strange / outdated translations, and some, not too obscure, words unexpectedly missing. True, but I'm yet to find the perfect dictionary of any size, and I have many of them. It could do with being expanded to add more words. It's a surprisingly small app as it is. Overall, pretty good. I'm happy enough with it, and there isn't really any competition, currently. Certainly none that don't require an internet connection. (not of great use when you're abroad unless you don't mind paying data roaming charges) It's expensive though. Especially given that it's only for the one platform (iPhone), and that Ultralinga have made free and trial versions available on windows mobile. That's really not very fair. I only ponied up the dough because I was making a trip to Italy and didn't feel I had a good alternative for the iPhone. 3.5 or 4 would be a fair rating for the updated application but, because of the price, I'll just give it 3

Disappointing & not as useful as it should have been

Mike Reich on

Heading to Italy on holiday, I was going to buy a normal pocket paperback dictionary for about half the price - however when we saw this, we decided to plump for this for convenience sake - despite the price difference. I think we made the wrong decision: Firstly, it is overly expensive for what it is. Secondly, it is not as extensive as it should be - there were a fair number of words we saw which we wanted to translate and it was unable to do so. There were various English words that we came across that it was unable to translate, and a lot of Italian words as well. In particular, the food and menu Italian is not up to scratch - words like fillet and some meats it doesn't translate accurately. We were caught out on several occasions and ended up with something different to what we thought we'd ordered. Finally, it's implementation whilst being fairly good, is not quite there. On a few occasions it was unable to translate a valid word from English - Italian on the first time of asking. If the bugs were ironed out, the dictionary extended and the price halved then it might be worth purchasing, but at £11.99 it's still way to expensive and a pocket dictionary will serve you much better.

Peculiar and non-existent translations

pmattessi on

There are some peculiar and missing translations in this dictionary that left me feeling it was a little unreliable. For example, "train" is translated as "serie" and "strascico" before the far more prevalent "treno". And "table" as "elenco" and "tabella" before "tavola". And even then, "tavola" is only included as an adjective, not as a noun. In all, for the cost, I'd say there are probably more reliable dictionaries out there

Apart from the obvious drawback...

vidchick on

...being the astronomical price it does what it says on the tin. I would like to see pronunciation of Italian words, rather than English - I know how to pronounce English, need to know how to pronounce Italian.
