Speed Limit App displays the current speed limit and your current speed. It detects European speed limit signs using the camera while driving and enhances the results by map based limits from OpenStreetMap. Thus it will even know limits which are not indicated by signs (i.e. Zone 30, or inner city areas). Of course it will warn you when you are too fast.
► Working principle of Speed Limit App
Speed Limit App is a road sign recognition app. For inner city limits we use map based information from OpenStreetMap. Both information is merged to provide an optimal limit indication. The speedometer gets its data from the GPS and is used to determine wether you are above or below the actual limit of the last detected road sign.
► Limitations of Speed Limit App
Speedometer Radar Camera does a computational intensive job that formerly was limited to mainframes. Therefore there are some restrictions:
- At night and in adverse lighting conditions the recognition of road signs might fail due to iPhone camera limitations.
- The app is optimized for European road signs. Unfortunately there is yet no support for US speed limits.
- There is no support for 'end of limit' signs yet and no support for place/city signs that might also decrease the speed limit according to local traffic road regulations.
- Sometimes road signs in narrow turns are missed due to the limited view angle of the camera
- Sometimes there are missed or false road sign detections
- Speedometer is updated every second

Speedometer Limit Camera Reviews
Brilliant but flawed
I love this app, it is brilliant in concept and mostly so in execution. However, on my 15 Pro Max it misses about half of the speed limit signs and really struggles with the digital motorway overhead signs (in both wide and narrow camera modes). And imho the actual speed needs to be larger, and not red on black as this is difficult to read at a glance.
Doesn’t work
This app doesn’t work. It don’t recognise speed limit signs.
A clever app, but…
This app works well on my motorcycle. However, if I am using my phone, then I also use it for navigation such as Waze. I would happily pay for this if it worked in conjunction with a decent navigation app. As such it is a good demonstration of the technology but not so useful in the real world.
Great App after initial problems with focus
Wrote an initial review because I couldn’t get it to focus and identify the signs. I knew at the time the windscreen mount was an issue, but thought my brand new IPhone SE just wasn’t focused.
Have now bought a new windscreen mount that doesn’t get in the way of the camera, and bingo, it works so much better. If the reported speed changes as you pass it, it found the sign, if it’s 60-100 meters further on, it’s using its database.
Only slightly annoying issue is in road works with reduced speed sign posted. It immediately finds the sign, but soon rejects it for its higher database record. It repeats this several times, but you are drawn to this.
Just LOVE the “bell”. So recognisable and you don’t lose interest like you do with warnings on satnav’s.
UK mount I purchased is an Ipalm, car holder, clip & go.
Superb
I used in several countries and works very well and perfect
Very variable results
Having tried a few speed apps over the past few days, sadly this one is very poor. I was able to drive around 400 metres past signs and it still showed a much higher limit, for example showing 60 mph in a 30 mph limit!
No thanks.
Great concept Poor in actuality
Looking at the App it seemed the answer to my needs (2 speeding tickets in 4 days) so I downloaded, paid for the Pro and within a few miles I could see it’s limitations.
Driving along a 30mph road the display says National Speed Limit. Luckily I’ve used this along roads I know the limits for. If I had no knowledge of them this App has shown it’s unreliable and that is unacceptable. The alarms are effective but do not repeat once you’ve transgressed.
There needs to be better GPS & mapping to make this effective but until that’s done find other apps. Such a shame as it looked very good
Speed
Awsome
Excellent!
This app is for anyone who can’t afford any more points on their licence. It’s very accurate and can read the variable digital gantry speed limits over smart motorways as well as normal speed limit signs. Absolutely brilliant. At night on streets without street lighting it won’t pick up most signs but the GPS puts the road speed limit in anyway so that doesn’t really matter. For those complaining about adds popping up, jeeeez just pay for the pro version.
Nothing special for paid app
Waste of money there are far better free apps out there . You can’t even use it in the background so you can use a driving app simultaneously.
