Camera framing preview app

Published by: Adam Fowler

Description

Viewfinder Preview is an iPhone app for previewing camera framing for any combination of camera and lens. Instead of spending all that time setting up your big camera, just choose your desired film/sensor size and focal length in the app and point the iPhone camera at what you want to photo to verify framing. If you are happy with the framing then you can get the big camera out. The app has a large database of camera sensors details and film formats but if the format you desire isn’t there you can add your own custom format. The app is targeted at stills photographers or film makers working in either film or digital. If you don’t have your big camera with you, Viewfinder Preview is still great for photo sketching, location scouting or story boarding.
The app includes
- Customisable menus so you can include the film/sensor formats and focal lengths you care about.
- A fully configurable light meter.
- You can take photos with it, so you have a record of shots you were framing.
- Photos taken with the app include additional data that describe the film format, focal length and lighting meter settings at the time the shot was taken
- Add notes to your photos
- A photo gallery for viewing photos taken with the app which also displays the additional data
- Share images in emails, messages
- Create albums of photos from the same project, trip etc
- Create PDF documents of albums
- Film stock emulation
- Wide angle lens adapter support

Viewfinder Preview Reviews

Doesn’t retain info for long

andydduncan on

I loved this app when I first discovered it, but it seems to not retain the notes I enter for long. I made several photographs and added all of my notes I wished to make and a few weeks later when I was ready to develop my film, all of those notes were gone. I had about 10 sheets of film that needed different development, but that info was gone. I decided to just develop them all together for a Normal development time, resulting in some getting too much development and others not enough.

Updated my stars to 3 will go to 5 if fully implemented. Need 6x17 and other aspect ratios like 65x24 On our fuji 50s. Limited by aspect ratios. Also when using non full frame are the focal lengths for the sensor chosen or Fframe equivalent? Tutorial? A video online could be helpful

this is the app I search for so long

although I spend some money on it but in fact this is the app I want for a long time. when I was taking film pictures I need a app can preview the lightmeter sets so much .not mentioned it also can record it to the gallery. one little suggestion: maybe we can add a config to choose whether the config automatically show on the side of pictures.

AMAZING!

This app is truly amazing! I shoot medium format film. Before I pull my cameras out, I pull out my phone, launch this app, and I compose my scene with it. I can change focal lengths, introduce filters, different film stocks, etc. I can even use the app as a lightmeter to determine what can settings I may want to use! I always pass on "Five Stars" recommendations to fellow photographers!

Great but might need an update for new iPhone

Origringo on

I love this app, the ease of use and film emulations are awesome! However, on my 14 Pro the field of view on 35mm and 50mm doesn’t seem to be correct. The 50 looks more like about 60. I’d like to use it for framing and metering all in one but it isn’t quite there. If this gets updated it’s 5 stars easily.
