Description

As seen in 10% Happier, Atlantic Magazine and The New York Times.
Find happiness by contemplating your mortality with the WeCroak app. Each day, we’ll send you five invitations at randomized times to stop and think about death. It’s based on a Bhutanese folk saying that to be a happy person one must contemplate death five times daily.
The WeCroak invitations come at random times and at any moment just like death. When they come, you can open the app for a quote about death from a poet, philosopher, or notable thinker.
You are encouraged to take one moment for contemplation, conscious breathing or meditation when WeCroak notifications arrive. We find that a regular practice of contemplating mortality helps spur needed change, accept what we must, let go of things that don’t matter and honor things that do.
We’ve also added features to make WeCroak work with your modern life.
• WeCroak only sends notification between 7 AM and 10 PM
• Open the app once per week to keep receiving your five daily WeCroak invitations at randomized times
Join the WeCroak Leap Monthly Subscription to go even deeper with death based mindfulness
• Access WeCroak's Daily Review tool and track what matters most to you each day
• Enjoy more and harder-hitting WeCroak quotes that are only for subscribers
• Receive weekly death mindfulness challenges
• Make your own Memento Mori images with your photos

Needs more quotes

I’m seeing the same quotes every time. Update with some new ones please.

Quote critique

Celtibird on

Love the concept, but all the quotes I’ve gotten have used he/him pronouns or explicitly only referred to men when discussing grander truths or observations about life.

not like it used to be

I have used this app for a long time and I really enjoyed it, but since they added a premium version the quality of the free version has really gone down. And I absolutely don’t begrudge them needing to make some money to keep the app going, but the way to do that is to add new features for premium and maybe an optional tip jar to the free version, not to make the free version worse by making all the quotes “inspirational” (insipid) celebrity babble. Unfortunately the premium version doesn’t seem worth it -ironically what drew me to the app in the first place was the promise to not make just another “mindfulness” app with goals/streak achievements and all that noise, which is exactly what leap appears to be. What made this app unique has been largely pruned away for the sake of marketability, and frankly if one is just looking for generic inspirational quotes X number of times a day then there are dozens of better apps on the market for that. It’s even possible to build something that does this yourself with very little tech know-how. Capitalism ruins everything, yada yada… just goes to show that trying to make non-attachment and meditations on mortality into a consumable product is probably an unworthy and unworkable goal from the outset. That’s maybe a good thing, and the thought definitely makes deleting an app I’ve used daily for years feel a bit less sad. And even in saying goodbye to WeCroak there’s a final speck of wisdom to take from it: all things end. It was nice while it lasted.

App needs work

I was really excited to use this app as a Buddhist and meditator. I was disappointed in the app’s performance as my 5 daily quotes didn’t come through, and the app itself is lacking in terms of settings and controls. It’s a great idea just not executed well.

Great concept, poor execution

I love the idea of this app and have had it for a few years but frankly it’s a bit silly now. The quotes that pop up are more and more completely unrelated to the subject of death and more and more celebrity oriented rather than serious Buddhist thought or philosophers in general. Sorry but Dolly Parton isn’t my go-to sage for pondering my inevitable death.

2nd Best to Holy Quran

Deanhuss on

United States

I literally never write reviews for anything whatsoever. But besides the Holy Quran, this Has to be one of the best apps I’ve ever downloaded. Just like praying five times a day do you get five daily reminder notifications from this app. If you don’t open the notifications they’ll eventually stop sending any. Constant quotes and reminders to make our lives in this world a better place. God bless whoever made and published this app. They must really care about people to make an app like this. I wish there was more quotes as every now and then I see the same quotes I’ve read before, but other than that it’s great can’t think of anything better. as for the premium features, it’s a nice addition. I don’t use anymore but it’s cool. One concern I do have is when I take pictures of my own and literally never see them again so that’s weird.

Important subject, weak content

jmdawson la on

United States

Just learned they offer “harder hitting quotes” in the paid subscription which wouldn’t be difficult considering the weak ones that come free. Some of them - often repeated - appear to be randomly selected, not really pertinent. I’d consider a subscription if the free version wasn’t underwhelming because this is an essential tool for a good life.

Great but can you fix the widget?

Dæłÿñ on

United States

Widget doesn’t display the new quote. Open it and still says “Open for a quote…” after exiting. Otherwise great app all around
