Elastic Drums is a music app showcasing an interactive drum kit, that enables to create a huge range of rhythmic grids, ranging from classical analog drumkits up to experimental soundscapes.
It contains six channels of high quality synthesized drum sounds, a step sequencer and 4 effect channels. All important control parameters are automatable. The result: Elastic drum composition with a unique character!
Features:
- 6 synth channels with 13 different percussion synth engines (kick, snare, hihat, clap, tom, wobble, fm, fm4, square, grain, synth, drone, sampler)
- 12 parameters for each synth engine
- automation for each parameter via knob recording or velocity
- 4 send effect channels with 2x13 mono effects and 2x11 stereo effects
- automation for all of the 8 possible effect parameters via xy pad
- master effects (stutter, delay, compressor ...)
- 16 step sequencer for the 6 channels, each with it's own tempo multiplier & length
- record audio and export to Soundcloud or Audioshare
- email audio recordings and presets
- Audiobus, Audiobus Remote, Inter-App Audio and Ableton Link support
- Midi learn/Midi implementation of the most important parameters
Because all sounds get generated in realtime, the app is cpu heavy! iPhones 5 and greater can handle it with no problem, on iPhone 4s effects 3 and 4 get switched off by the engine automatically to save some cpu power. iPhone 4 and iPad1 are NOT recommended!
Elastic Drums is published by MoMinstruments, the instruments app label of Mouse on Mars and friends.

Great for making sounds and iterating, a little limited for adding variation

This is one of my favorite grooveboxes, hardware or not, for the process of making variations on sounds and patterns. It’s super easy to make copies of things, so if you’re the kind of musician who’s always thinking “what if I did it that way instead?” you can really quickly build up a set of variations on a loop. Then you can instantaneously switch not just between patterns, but entire projects if you want while performing. (Also, each pattern in a project file can have a different sound set.). If only DAWs made it that easy to play live! The area I find this lacking is features that most hardware or software gives you to add variation to a sound, like LFOs or conditional triggers. You can record automation, but it’s always synced to the pattern, so it’s gonna sound like a loop. And there is a performance effects section with beat repeaters, stutters, and things like that, but it feels more intended for doing a flashy breakdown, not something that can keep on running on its own and add some life. There are some ways you can get around this, like make 2 copies of a track and set them to different lengths, but that will only get you so far, and then you’ve already used up 2 out of 6 tracks. So unfortunately it feels a little limited depending on what type of music/performance you’re into. If they added LFOs and made a desktop version I could probably get lost in this for a couple years though. It’s dead simple but the sounds are super nice and the workflow is just that great.

Doesn’t sound right on Bluetooth headphones

Using my AirPods, it sounds horrible. This is the same issue reported by others 4 years ago I believe. Hopefully this can be fixed - holding on buying devs other apps - I need to be able to use air pods in a pinch for iOS apps to make sense

Inspiration

Every time I come back to this app, I am utterly inspired and feel silly for not having used it daily. Like any synth you have to practice the workflow to really get the best out of it, but most everything here is logical/rational/user friendly. And it sounds amazing and the automation is brilliant. Totally relevant in 2024 and, for synthetic drums of all styles, always will be.

AUv3 pleeeeeeeeease! 😿

Love it. Want to use it more but prefer the state recall and other features of AUv3 over IAA. Pretty please, make this come true..,

Kicks are distorted

Kicks sound distorted. All fx are off. I’ve deleted the app, reinstalled. Tried on iPhone 15 and iPad mini 6th gen. Love to give it a higher rating but it’s unusable at present

One of the best! Ideas for improvement

Hello. I love this app. Its flexible, fun to play, and a powerful musical tool. The main thing i think could be reworked is in the arrange section/song mode/chaining If these areas were improved this app would be the perfect drum solution for me. Ideas for improvement: Either Multiple looped sections rather than the one main loop which can change length by multiples of 4. Or the Ability to chain sequence loops together manually. Look to the keystep pro chaining for inspiration. Either of these would create a far more useable drum solution for multiple use cases. (Ie. Live) Also Setting to queue patterns rather than change instantly where playback is at could also aid in live performance settings. Maybe long press functionality…?

Versatile but missing auv3 support

Great app with lots of fun sound design tools but boy is it hard to get audio from this in 2024 without auv3 support. Sure, I could AUM or Audiobus it, but given its sister app has this features and is at the same price point, it would be a welcomed quality of life improvement.

Stellar.

While there are numerous drum machine apps - this one is spectacular. If sound options ranging from sample to various types of synthesis, to independent beat cycle lengths doesnt grab your attention, surely the ability to perform the playback switching in real-time will! There’s plenty more fun to be had here.

Never works.

Every time I open this app, it doesn’t play. Not on the ipad or iphone. Always have to erase it & redownload it to get it to work properly.

I love the Elastic apps

I have been using elastic drums from day one, and I love it still. I really enjoy the workflow and design, it’s very appropriate for the way I think about some drum sound design. I do have a problem for the past couple of years though, inter app audio is not very consistent, buggy, crashes and generally does not play nice with Cubasis (which I use about 99% of the time). It’s not a elastic drums issue, it’s an inter app audio issue. It happens with all other apps that use inter app audio. I’m at the point that I just won’t use apps that only use inter app audio. I would love to dive back into using elastic drums, but every single time I use elastic drums I have a crash before I get to render anything. This may have something to do with the fact that I really push the cpu on my mixes, but with AU3’s I generally don’t loose much data when I have a crash, and with au3’s crashes happen way less frequently. Freezing tracks with inter app audio doesn’t help, and I try simply rendering elastic drums tracks outside of using cubasis, but it makes it difficult to easily make changes to a things if I have to render, export and then import for each and every change. It’s a big hassle that kind of gets in the way of using the app/flow. Again I don’t think it has anything to do with the way the app is made. Elastic apps are rock solid. Inter app audio is not rock solid and really is making its way out. Hopefully other developers will see this and convert their apps to au3 primarily.
