Tidal in heos weak
Great that we now have tidal flac hi res support in the heos app however, the tidal layout in heos is not being updated to my personal taste in music. I can’t see my mix’s created by tidal, I can’t see personal picks for me. Have had to buy a Wiim mini as tidal in the Wiim app is much more feature rich also I now have the pleasure of tidal connect with the Wiim mini connected to the optical input on me ceol n10 - I could airplay tidal but that’s gonna downgrade my hi res listening so that’s a no go for me. Using the heos app does not update my tidal app with what I’ve been listening to so if I search for new music and play it’s not logged within tidal so to achieve this is where the Wiim comes into play for tidal connect- let’s hope heos brings tidal connect soon.
A challenger to Sonos?
I’ve been increasingly frustrated with the Sonos app - the frequent updates, the glitchy behaviour and the prioritisations of features that I don’t use against the ones I do (accessing file shares and changing networks in the app went missing when I needed them). For that reason I’ve sold all of my Sonos kit and bought Denon instead.
So on to the HEOS app. For my needs it just works. It’s easy to add and configure devices. It finds my music sources on my local network including my mini DLNA server (Sonos doesn’t seem keen on non-streaming sources) and plays them without fuss. So far no glitchy behaviour and I can go to bed reasonably sure that in the morning some feature won’t have gone missing.
Better documentation would be beneficial
I have had a Sonos full house system for many years but the latest so-called update tipped me over the edge so I decided to throw out all the Sonos kit, apart from the soundbar, and start again. I chose Denon Home 150 speakers because reviews indicated that sound was superior to Sonos and the price wasn’t too different. The big thing for me is to be able to play music from networked NAS drives. I actually purchased a new Synology NAS to use with the new speakers, but that’s a whole separate story. The HEOS app is very different from Sonos and there are some things that I could do with Sonos that I can’t do with HEOS, but, I can happily play all my music from any networked drive anywhere I have the speakers and getting used the its little foibles is a minor inconvenience. I do wish the documentation was a bit more comprehensive and written more for music lovers and less for tech lovers.
Still no Qobuz
Would give 5 stars if you can add Qobuz.
Better
Credit where credit is due. The app was hopeless but a recent update has made it much more stable and useable.
Denon Heos
At best it is ok. Put simply, it does not work very well. Sonos operating system is in a different league. Slow, temperamental etc. Just not good enough.
New interface
The new interface is dreadful, it looks like Windows 8. If you have TuneIn as a favourite, it displays “Top 40 & Pop Music” and “Trending” thumbnails, with no option to edit these. Same with Amazon Music, it adds “New Music” and “Recommended” thumbnails. This means every time you open HEOS, the screen is filled with radio stations or music recommendations you have no interest in…every time, same channels. I’d like to see a future update allowing me to edit these preview thumbnails, making them my favourite radio channels or Amazon playlists. I also reported a bug with Quick Select to Denon support, got no response and bug is still present.
Cannot clear queue
Bought a fantastic amp that makes everything sound how you want, thumbs ups Marantz. Then the software integration layer is this app. Not sure how it can interact this badly Every track you try to play, just redirects to current track. No way to play anything else other than what’s already playing.
Please contact me if you would like a run through of the issue.
Not impressed with connectability
Can never get it to connect with my denon home 350. It continually says cannot find ip address. About to delete and download again before giving up. Bloody nightmare
