I’ve been trying to learn a language for a year now, and I paid for a 1 year subscription to Memrise to supplement the language courses I was doing. At the time, Memrise had a good layout with short phrases and words related to a topic, and short videos that you could watch with those words used to practice your listening skills. I got the subscription because I liked what it offered. Then they changed everything. There was a big focus on AI conversations with MemBot, a feature I hated for many reason. For starters, membot would repeat the same conversation prompts over and over, day after day, multiple times a day. Second, the topics were unrelated to anything I’d learned, so having a conversation with membot was nearly impossible. Third, the conversations membot had were way more advanced than I could reasonably read, forcing me to rely on the translation feature. Memrise prompts users to use all the features. First a short round of vocabulary, usually a minute or two with 4 or 5 words. Then have you watch a video, then prompt you to chat with membot. Then again with membot. And again. And again. It become annoying and unhelpful to my language learning. The other problem is the over reliance on AI voices. When I subscribed, Memrise had real people giving real line readings in the target language, making it good for hearing and replicating natural speech. But after I subscribed, I noticed more and more AI used for the “Scenarios”. The AI lacks the nuance of human speech and is terrible for learning how to speak a new language you’re unfamiliar with. The AI voice is awful and feels like a cheap cost cutting measure. The last issue I encounters was resetting progress. I would log in each day and it would have me watch the same videos that I’d already seen many times before. There are many videos, and they advance as your vocabulary grows, but everyday it would just show me every video starting at the very beginning. Meaning that by day 45, I’d seen the same “olá” video 45 times. To progress any further in the videos, I’d have to watch ALL of the videos that preceded it. It made me not want to use the videos feature. There isn’t a good path for learning, either. The app just randomly throws new scenarios your way with no rhyme or reason. It feels directionless and kills motivation. So the AI voices made the “Scenarios” useless, the repeating videos made the “Videos” feature useless, and the random topics made the “Conversations” feature useless. I felt
They are stealing your account. Here’s how it’s done. They offer you to purchase a paid subscription (they’ll even offer a discount). Once you’ve paid, the subscription doesn’t activate. You start investigating and find instructions that say you need to go back to the subscriptions page and click on the ‘Restore Purchases’ button. When you click the button, a pop-up window appears, simply asking you to enter your Apple ID password. That’s the straightforward social engineering trick.
I found memrise so much nicer than other apps, but that was due to things that have since been removed: - the word library of objects around me - multiple types of exercises cards/typing/speaking/listening - useful practical content such as asking for the wifi or toilet at the cafe and other day-to-day idiomatic things. I wished it would improve on that trend, but updates have been slow (for dutch) and in the last year it went in a direction I no longer like. It now has a cumbersome UI besides the removed features. I’m actually very disappointed that the library of vocabulary I was completing disappeared. Now it looks just like yet another app, although it is still one of the only ones which offers Portuguese as opposed to just offering Brazilian. With the new UI, it’s frustrating to try and learn more vocabulary as, after completing a thing, it shows a button for AI instead of a continue and needs 5 clicks to go back into just continuing. Watching random videos and the AI are nice extra, but they’ve sadly replaced what was good about this app. It’s no longer simple to go practice vocab or listening/speaking :( I also realize that after 5years of using this app, I instead learned much more in 5 classes. I think what was holding me back was the lack of structure and grammar. I wish this app would have introduced (for dutch) normal sentences, inversion, negative, questions. I wish it had exercises to practice a dialog with hi - name is - nice to meet you - bye + how are you doing, shop situation, etc instead of AI! just a script, it’s nice to repeat things. And another type of exercise for clocks and time, another for numbers, another to associate correct questions/answers (when, who, etc). I hope it goes more in the future for a structured curated approach with progression. Also very disappointing that I can’t share the purchase with my family. I still hope Memrise does well in the future, but I wouldn’t recommend it anymore as really nice unless to someone who’s specifically looking for Portuguese as there’s little alternative.
Maybe I am too stupid to use this, but it’s not clear on what to do, you appear to need a basic knowledge just to start, so not for total beginners like me. The people they use to say words are incredibly irritating, an avatar would be much less annoying. It is just over complex, unstructured and not for the total beginner ( or thicko ) sadly the ones I like the look of, do not do European Portuguese. Three stars is generous 🙃
Estava a ser útil mas desde há uns dias que não consigo que funcione no iPad.
С обновлением пропали ряд функций, зато всюду теперь пихают стремные видео с примитивной лексикой
Better than Duolingo as it teaches you actually useful sentences, however it has the same problem of repeting the same words/phrases too often instead of teaching you new ones.
Pouco conteúdo free disponível …. Insuficiente para utilizador poder avaliar e subscrever a app na versão completa
I’ve been using memrise for a few years now, i like it because it has a flash card style to it. My problem is, and i have sent this to the feedback/request but had no response, when the audio plays and you have to choose the word it plays it doesn’t show the translation afterwards (and vice-versa). This makes the question quite irrelevant since okay, I can hear and identify, but haven’t yet memorised the meaning of it so don’t know it means.
