myGov Code Generator

They should really just allow people to use whatever 2FA app/s they want… Thankfully I found a desktop app (on GitHub some years ago now) that was able to give me the TOTP seed/secret (I think it displayed a QR code and the plaintext) - meaning I can use the 2FA app/s of my choice to get the codes. I just use Bitwarden for all my 2FA codes these days and FreeOTP for Bitwarden itself. It’s handy to use Bitwarden for 2FA as the codes are copied to the clipboard after it inserts the login info. If I delete this app or lose my phone or something I won’t lose access to my myGov account because I have the seed/secret in Bitwarden. I found that not all 2FA apps support the more advanced SHA512 algorithm though - which is what the myGov one uses.

Not only have they reinvented the wheel, but they can’t even keep it updated along side the myGov sign in options. If you swap to passkey, you can’t register the Authenticator app as you can only use a username and password. That’s not even talking about broken scaling on the login screen.

This is an Australian embarrassment that ServicesAustralia can find a decent app developer to improve this appalling bad app.

It is useless! It doesn’t work!

My old device no longer works but transferring to a new device seems impossible. It won’t let me sign in with the new device, the instructions are terrible. Do they ever UX test this stuff?

Once again the Australian government proves that it likes to pay people to recreate perfectly good existing apps 🤦🏻‍♂️ Why create this app and force me to use it when I have a perfectly good authenticator in the form of Microsoft Authenticator, which I’m using for everything else. This app won’t even I let me backup my details on iCloud in case I swap/lose my phone like most other authenticators. And to make things worse it looks like if I can’t use this app (because my phone is lost or broken) I can just ask them to send me a text message and it’ll bypass the whole thing! Everybody knows that text message 2FA is outdated and not secure. Why is the government forcing us to use an app which is ready five years out of date?

Literally can’t set it up

How can I access the app when I need to register a device- but the app already says I have a device on the account so I need to go into myGov and delete the device… BUT I NEED THE CODE TO GET INTO THE APP.

Another joke of a security id code generator. People switch phones these days like their undies logging in again is a joke on a new phone. WEF here we go….
