Could be excellent but has fundamental flaws

CyclingMonk on

In general, and for very simple actions, this is a good app. It reliably tracks rides and provides good turn-by-turn route following instructions. BUT it has one major flaw, which renders it pretty much useless in my book. The problem lies in the ‘Explore’ function, where you search for nearby routes. This feature is downright awful. Let’s say you are looking for a new route to ride when you are on holiday in Italy. On the map you find that small Italian town you are planning to stay in, and zoom in to it to search for routes. This next step should be logical, but it is not. You hit ‘search in this area’ and a shambolic mess of routes is displayed. Most of these don’t start in the town but merely pass through (why would you want to see them by default?). Anyway, you click on a route and the map infuriatingly zooms out to show the whole extent of it. Let’s say that route is not one you are interested, so, to find another one you have to manually (yes manually) zoom back in to the town (which you can’t now find) and restart the process all over. This time you get different routes presented…eh, what’s going on? You try to narrow down the route choice with the options of surface type etc, and suddenly you get MORE routes presented. MORE not fewer? Eh, this is bonkers! If you are doing this in-app then things are even worse as each route you select appears as a red line on the map and when you select subsequent routes they overlay on top of the previously selected ones. Soon you have no idea what is going on as the map is just strewn with red lines. It is absolutely and utterly awful. What’s more, let’s say you know there is a route from that Italian town that your Italian friend Guiseppe created previously. Can you find it? Good luck. Eventually you will but it will take a huge amount of perseverance and time. So at this stage you give up. You go to the local cafe and you luckily meet a friendly Italian ex-pro who scribbles a route on a piece of paper for you…Molte grazie! Ciao! PLEASE RWGPS fix this!! It’s dreadful. The UK app ‘OS Maps’ does this far far more intuitively. Can you not replicate their approach? SIMPLY FIXES RWGPS NEED TO MAKE: DO NOT show routes that merely pass through a place. Have this as an option that can be switched ON if you want but by default the ‘explore’ function should only show routes that START at, or very near to, the chosen location. STOP the awful ‘zoom out’ thing when a route is selected, OR, at the very least hav

Great App.

Really easy to plot a route nave to my Garmin and ride. Love it

Pretty disappointing for an app that costs £60 a year

HuggyGMan on

Planning a bike packing trip through France and down to Barcelona, was attracted to the app since you can show an overlay of osm cycling routes, that said the route planner refuses to stick to them, even when you toggle prefer cycling infrastructure. So what should’ve been a fairly easy plot of following a handful of major cycling routes is a nightmare of hundreds if not thousands of points trying to get it to follow the route it shows. Eventually it ground to a halt from all the points and i gave up

Love the personal heat map function

Useless

It’s not free you have to pay for doing anything in it.

Just use google maps

This app is not useful for city tours. The navigation is no better than google maps and the interface is a bit clunkier. It does have a lot of bike routes submitted by others, but this is probably better for those who are training specifically for cycling. Attempted to use this app in Singapore to tour the city, but we often encountered difficult roads with no bike lanes and the journey took so much longer that we had to cancel the tour. On a second attempt, google maps with its 'add stop' functionality to see certain landmarks proved much more effective.

List of in app charges is ridiculous

I use this as a cycling club member with no subscription and I can’t fault the app for my purposes. That list of in app charges though. It desperately needs simplifying. It is extremely off putting to someone of my mere intelligence.

Was great but now forces iOS 16

Unintended additions to circular route

Lejogger on

Vereinigtes Königreich

I copied into ridewithgps and then reversed a route; the Cantii Way in Kent, England. I then tried to split into three day segments but somehow it added more miles after my intended end which I then tried, unsuccessfully, to remove in order to have a correct end point, but: 1. The splitting process did not work as intended. 2. I could not remove the extra miles added somehow as it overlaid the original route. I tried to put in control points but only managed a small removal. 3. When I tried to drag back a point to create a definite end point it created extra loops. To remove why can’t one right click between two control points and say delete? Sometimes moving around the screen extra sections are added with no relation to the route! Adding extra directional arrows would help and some way of differentiating an erroneous route overlay.
