Spoutible

I’ve been on it for a while now and it is definitely 100 times better than the alternatives. As long as it sticks to its promise to fight bots, harassment and disinformation, I’m in. Sure, there are jerks and accounts you won’t agree with, but the “Block” and “Mute” buttons work really well ;) and there are a TON of great features.

While most of the users are great, the CEO isn’t. You need to watch what you say as he’ll suspend you for the tiniest criticism. You don’t even have to break the TOS of the platform. I saw many people suspended just for asking a legitimate question. Then he allows a small segment to pile on, harass and attack anyone they want without fear of reprisal. If you try and report them, you’ll get suspended. Keep your head down, don’t interact or criticize with the CEO, and you may be OK.

I thought Spoutible was going to be a safe space for me as a member of the LGBT community. To be fair, the first few months were good. Then a handful of accounts began attacking my friend, who reported it with screensnap evidence, and the CEO (who does everything, there’s no team) ignored it. The abuse continued until my friend was suspended for trying to defend himself. This pattern continued with several others, myself included, who indicated any sort of problem with the site, users, or CEO. In fact, the CEO breaks his own TOS rule of ‘rallying’ by quoting any such message so that his sycophants can attack the person who posted. Who does this remind you of? It was never a safe space.

Love the community on Spoutible. If you’re looking for stuff from music to politics to sports to books to news to general silliness and shenanigans, this is your place. Since it has no algorithm, you have to be prepared to actively seek out fellow Spouters who are interested in similar things. So if you want to be spoon-fed, this ain’t your site. Also, if you like to use bigoted language, not your site. Like to post sexual content? Not your site. Like to post conspiracy theories? Definitely not your site. You get banned for all these things. But if you’re looking for a safe space that supports users of varied ages, genders, orientations, colours and abilities, this is your place for sure. Oh, also - some of the great features include customizable news feeds; an interactive word cloud that shows words that are making waves at the moment; a tab just for viral spouts; threading that automatically numbers each spout in the thread; collaborative threading that multiple users can create together; lists; and an edit button that lets you edit your spouts after you post them.

The app is currently a 7/10 and receives meaningful updates more than once a month. The community is an 8/10 and growing. I am a big fan of Ivory and Mastodon but spend much more time on Spoutible. It feels like the internet did before big social and endless grifting and misinformation took over. It’s a great place to spend time.

I have enjoyed using this all to date. The app is better than the web based version also. I’m still not 100% comfortable using it but it took me a long time to figure out Twitter back in the day. I can only hope that there are more users soon and that people give it a chance. 4 star review because it’s great, minus 1 star simply because there’s always room for improvement.

Info says it works on my iPhone, but it definitely doesn’t. On the login screen nothing I type appears in the text boxes, so i can’t enter my details and log in. I’ve been waiting for this app since the early days, so sad i can’t use it ☹️
