Loscil - Adrift

This is a beautiful generative music app that is comparable to much more pricy alternatives such as Endel and Brian Eno’s Reflection (both apps I use). There aren’t many generative ambient music apps out there but this one manages not only to sound great (I often forget the music is not directly made by hand which is a tribute to the app’s quality) but to keep the price down. There are four tracks (ambient music generators) included and each sounds individual yet well-fitted to the timeless and chilling theme. I have noticed a slight bug that reverses the track that is selected when tapping one of the four options (eg. tapping on track 1 plays track 4 and vice versa). This however is a minor annoyance that the price more than makes up for. The one thing the app lacks is a pause timer. So if you wish for the music to stop when you fall asleep, you’ll have to set a timer in the clock app with ‘When Timer Ends’ set to stop playing. I would definitely recommend this app to anyone who wants calm and hypnotising music that keeps you in the same timeless suspense as a ship that has sailed adrift.

...at a really good price. Shifting and drifting sonic fragments create a varied composition within a continuously harmonious framework. If you enjoy the music of Eno, Stars of Lid, and other artists who use sound to excite the spatial imagination, then this is going to please you. It’s surprising how much variety can be generated from some simple harmonic and textural elements. The sense of drifting un-moored motion is also present in the nifty graphic component, which evokes, like the sound, a seemingly endless seascape from simple repetition of some basic elements.

I am aware that these are supposed to be endless compositions, but they are so beautiful that it’s perfect for reading in bed at night then drifting off to sleep. The one thing missing? a cutoff timer so my Bluetooth speaker and iPad don’t need recharging every morning! A stunning app which is well worth it’s price...and more.

Good to see and hear artists, (other than the king of ambient - Brian Eno), produce sound and vision for people to admire and escape into. The soundscapes that live in this app can enthral and surprise, and even transport you into other worlds and dimensions if you let it. If you are are an ambient music fan such as myself, this is well worth taking a look and listen to.

Love this. will listen to it for ever. But why is it not compatible with my imac?

I've been a fan of Loscil's stuff for a while (since playing osmos) and it's always nice to hear what he's been doing, but this is something different. The fact that you can listen to these pieces endlessly and that they change/vary is great. I've only been listening for an hour or so so far, but will give it more of a listen this weekend. I'm not a fan of "generative" music and to my mind ADRIFT is different to that. I can see myself listening to this a lot when I'm reading or going to sleep. I make loops of ambient music myself, but never really feel like I have a finished product. This app shows me that you don't have to have a start, middle and end...

Late to this party. Great app, though I guess its been some time and very buggy on Apple TV 4K.

I enjoy the music while it lasts, but that’s not very long — less than an hour before it degenerates into a simple drone. At that point it appears to have stopped generating new music and reached stasis. Is this normal? Not the “endless” experience of other generative music apps, like the Eno range.
