Planta: Plant & Garden Care

I was looking for an app to help me take care of my houseplants, since I’m still quite new to plant care. The idea of automatic plant identification, personalized care plans, and AI-powered diagnosis sounded very appealing—so I decided to subscribe for a year. After using it for a while, I can say the care plan is extremely basic. It just sends generic reminders to water or mist, without adapting to seasons or actual plant needs. There’s no noticeable difference in care between summer and winter—watering schedules stay the same regardless of conditions. The auto-diagnose feature is even more disappointing. It doesn’t actually analyze the photos in a meaningful way; instead, it relies heavily on a short survey you fill out when submitting the picture. If the soil appears wet, it always assumes overwatering—even if I watered the plant just the night before. If it’s dry, it automatically labels it as underwatered. I tried testing it with multiple plants and scenarios, and the results were always the same. The “Dr. Planta” diagnosis feels more like guesswork than smart analysis. The only real benefit I found is being able to track plant progress over time. But honestly, I don’t think you need a paid app just to log repotting or pruning—a regular reminder app can handle that just fine.

I wanted to love this app - it’s beautifully designed and has some great functionality for ongoing maintenance, but the basis of accurately identifying plants is flawed. I’ve been comparing several plant apps and somehow the plant identification on Planta differs wildly from others, as well as Apple Photos own free plant identification. If it weren’t for the vast inaccuracies, I’d recommend strongly.

I have tried a few plant care apps and stuck with this one but to be fair it could use improvement. Firstly is the plant / pot sizes. They are only in inches (annoying because most of the world uses a metric system) but also they are in 2 inch increments. So if my plant is 9 inches tall, I have to choose either 8 or 10. Makes progress tracking very inaccurate. Another thing that is lacking is the ability to adjust the fertiliser schedules - I use innovative fertiliser that is dosed differently, as well as spraying leaves with bioatimulant every 2 weeks - I can’t easily track last time I used biostimulant. Also, when taking pictures of the plant, the frame is very contra intuitive, instead of normal screen you get an abstract “plant in a pot” shape so you think you have to match pot with the pot shape and plant with the plant shape but it doesn’t work that way. Needlessly complicated. Overall it would be a good app if it were free but I am paying premium and I feel like I am not getting moneys worth. I am unlikely to renew my premium and will probably try premium with a different app instead.

Utter joke! The “scan plant” option is not working at all! Don’t waste your money on subscription!!!

I love this app soo much helps me name and keep track of all my plants love it soo much! Soo upset about the social groups and plant posting being stoped tho :(

Have found that I paid for a subscription I do not want, cannot use app as I had wished to…it’s hopeless in identifying garden plants. Tried help to get cancellation and if money taken to refund. Do not wish to use this app.

Paid the price for one year when it was advertised as a few pound a month . . . I didn’t sign up for over £30 to be taken out of my bank in one go. Scanned 3plants following the guidelines and tried multiple different angels and the app didn’t even recognise them. (Not unusual plants at all) when I take photos and search through google it finds the plants straight away and recognises them. Feel like I’ve been robbed of my money and now have a useless app and has left me still on the hunt to find a good plant app.

The free part of the app has a very poor offering. Every time you try to do anything, the pop up asking you to subscribe appears. It would be great to be able to trial some of the functionality (e.g. 1 diagnosis a day for free) before paying.

It looks great, I’m just starting to familiarise with the app. But will you please add an option to change °F to °C and ft/inches to cm? I’m from Europe and I can’t get used to the American system… I know I can google it but to do it every time it’s a hassle that could be easily avoided. Thank you

Hard to negotiate site. Could not find search. Disappointed I paid for this for a year .
