Description

Chord! is a chord and scale reference that works with any fretted instrument like guitar, basses, ukulele, banjos,… It computes and analyses all the possible fingerings for chords, scales, and arpeggios.

With Chord!, you can also write a song by simply dragging and dropping chords, transpose it in any key, compute the fingerings with any tuning and generate a beautiful print-ready PDF, etc.

You can also import your existing songs in text format (please note that the app does not ship with songs). You can also link audio tracks from your music library and play them at the same time while adjusting their pitch and/or speed.

You don't even have to know music theory to use it: behind its brute force, the app knows how to handle by itself some subtleties of music to give meaningful results.

If you don't have to be an advanced player to use the app, you can however take a look under the hood and tweak the parameters if you like! Whatever is your level or your instrument, Chord! will adapt and give you the most precise answer.

You can search for any chord, split (like D/F#), or not. If you're a beginner, you can choose the chord from a list, but you can also use the intelligent keyboard to enter the chord as it is written. If this keyboard is a great way to enter chords, it is also very useful to discover and understand how the chords are formed. You can also enter some notes on a neck to find which chords it can be. You can hear how each fingering sounds. Chord arpeggios are also supported, as well as drop voicings (drop 2, drop3, etc.).

The app also ships with the biggest list of named scales (and you can create your own scales). It analyses and presents them with nice interactive views (scale, score, and keyboard). Of course, it can also lay down these scales on a neck (with sound) and compute their fingerings. Like for chords, you can even search for a scale from its fingering!

Each scale can be harmonized (decomposed into chords). You can also enter a sequence of chords to find which scale you can use to improvise onto.

You can use one of the hundred tunings that ship with the app, or you can add your own ones, for any instrument, with or without a capo, even with broken strings if you want!

The app uses custom and unique algorithms to generate charts, easily input complex harmonic structures, extract chords from fingerings, determine finger positions, compute keys of scales, generate chords from scales and find scales that go well with some chords.

For example, Chord! is the right tool in these situations:
• You want to have your songbook available at any time, in your pocket;
• You're a beginner and you want to know how to play easily a D/F# chord;
• One gave you a ukulele and you want to know how to tune it and how to play the G Hawaiian scale;
• You want to know on what scale you can improvise for some chord sequence (and the answer can be different than the Pentatonic minor!);
• You want to print your song and share it with your band.
• You want to experiment with this nice open tuning, moreover with a bottleneck;
• Your little sister can't make bar chords and you want to show her how she can do without bars, with three (little) fingers only;
• You want to impress your little sister by showing her how you can play the same chords with two bars!
• You want to understand how this fingering for C13 is actually a fingering for C13;
• You broke a string and want to know how to play some chords without;
• You want to know how Django managed to play with two and a half fingers.

The app fully supports left-handed instruments.

Main functions of the app:
- Write, transpose, fingerize, print, and share songs;
- Search chord fingerings (or chord charts);
- Search chords from fingerings;
- Search scale fingerings;
- Search scales from fingerings;
- Search chords from scale;
- Search scales from chords.

So much info

Grayjack on

One of the best chord apps out there. Easy to use with loads of features.

The acme of guitar theory products.

Parenthesis Gel on

A truly great and comprehensive piece of work. An immensely creative and brilliant tool. If you’re interested in fretboard knowledge, this’s all you need.

Basic bug in harmoniser

short_arms_deep_pockets on

Clearing a single chord removes it from the edit list but not from the display or harmoniser engine? Cmon.

Huge alt-tuning integrations

DADGAGLOVIN on

Taking a bit of getting used to as it's my first go with tab notation apps but finding Chord! extremely usable and feature rich for the price. I use DADGAD a lot and this approach is going to really benefit my notation as I'm not the strongest with staves and the like especially with the open tuning accidental that get thrown up. Enjoy!

Superb for jobbing musicians

SteelBearman on

I’m sure a lot of folks use this for the guitar assets, but as a busy musician, this is blooming brilliant! Easily import lyrics and chords, it does its magic (and it IS magic!) , and I have a songbook that can be transposed for several different bands. It means no more transposing on the fly. And thats gold dust to me.

Problems when harmonising scales

The Illustrious Toad on

When I harmonise the A harmonic minor scale, the chord diagrams label the vii chord as Ab dim, rather than G# dim. Obviously they are enharmonic equivalents, but the labelling, whilst correctly displayed in the scale detail view is incorrect in the chord diagrams view. This is a serious issue that could lead to confusion. I will update my app rating once this is fixed: a blemish on an otherwise brilliant app requiring urgent attention.

Just incredible & worth every penny

lastnicknameimtryinghere on

It is feature rich and just plain and simply does what it does better than any other I’ve found (and I’ve looked). The reverse search and harmonisation features are especially my favourites. The ability to create custom fingerings for chords and so on is also fantastic as is the songwriter utility. Beautifully and sensibly laid out. I do not rate 5 stars easily. This app is as close to perfect for the features I’ve found. I would add certain features but it would be nitpicking and I already intend to suggest them to the developer myself.

One of the best apps made

Clarkeyboy55 on

I've had this for a few years and I'm only just beginning to make use of all its many many features. If you have any need to look at chord structures, arpeggios, scales and a huge amount more I promise this app will not disappoint. Not sure what I paid for it but easily worth £20+ A really very solid resource for anyone studying guitar. Well done developers.

Interesting. Not quite there yet. Complexity over usability

Pereshaped on

No GUI confirmation of alteration of chord voicing settings, I.e. no “save, delete, erase” . Nightmare to navigate and get things done. No obvious way of deleting a voicing and keeping others Arpeggios with no LOOP parameter? That is a serious downer. The interface is frankly daunting and sometime over- complicated, especially when creating new chord voicings or analysing a chord on the fretboard. It has a learning curve that could be a lot more linear i.e input chord via graphic of carousel and name it without intermediary stages. This aspect is viscose. The tagging system is cumbersome. Too many pages to navigate. The developer should concentrate on providing good functionality for either a chord aid or a chord song maker. Trying to give the user unlimited permutations and asking the user to navigate endless settings to get the right continuations is a headache. The concept is good but the implementation is a nightmare of complexity that hinders creativity rather than enhance it. The developer really has to sort out “ confirmation” of chord voicing edits as no matter how many time you try to get rid of say a 4th in a voicing it is still there afterwards. Just add “ save, delete “ standard interaction confirmation actions. I regret purchasing this app

Very special, really clever app...

RobHDean on

There is so much to this it is extraordinary. I have used and bought a great many guitar chord and scale apps - I have just looked and still have at least seven others installed - but this puts them all to shame. Some features are pure gold: you can generate scale fingerings according to your own requirements (you can insist on three notes per string, or set a maximum and minimum number of notes per string and maximum fret-span on any one string), you can create your own fingering patterns manually if you wish and then print or export them. I think those features are unique. Not entirely unique to iOS apps but perhaps so to a dedicated guitar app like this is that the app will analyse your chord progression and tell you which scales fit with it. I've not had this app long, I'm sure I will discover still more: I have not even looked at arpeggios or tried generating my own song chordsheets. The depth of the app does mean it has sometimes taken me a moment to figure how to navigate, and there are a couple of settings I wish were 'sticky', but I could still be learning from this app in 200 years time.
