Description

This is the official DhammaOrg iOS mobile App for Vipassana Meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin.
Vipassana Meditation
Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was taught in India more than 2500 years ago as a universal remedy for universal ills, an Art of Living. Vipassana is the process of self-purification by self-observation. One begins by observing the natural breath to concentrate the mind. Then, with a sharpened awareness, one proceeds to observe the changing nature of body and mind and experiences the universal truths of impermanence, suffering and egolessness. This truth-realization by direct experience results in mental purification.
Courses
The technique of Vipassana Meditation is taught at 10-day residential courses during which participants learn the basics of the method, and practice sufficiently to experience its beneficial results. There are no charges for the courses - not even to cover the cost of food and accommodation. All expenses are met by donations from people who, having completed a course and experienced the benefits of Vipassana, wish to give others the opportunity to also benefit.
Locations
Courses are given in numerous Meditation Centers and at Non-Center course locations. Each location has its own schedule of courses. In most cases, an application for admission to these courses can be completed online using this App. There are numerous Centers currently in operation and more in development around the world, including Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

Dhamma.org Reviews

Add ability to log chantings

Norman Marshall on

United Kingdom

Continuing to find this invaluable. The log feature is very helpful in keeping me on track and it would be even better for two things: being able to manually log a sitting, and logging when I meditate while listening to one of the morning or special chantings. Great work. With metta.

About time

Daily sitter on

United Kingdom

At last we have as great App that can find courses, centres but what I like most is the groups sitting recordings and ability to automatically log our daily sittings- Well done the IT team.

App update erased my data?

Studentus Maximus on

United States

An app update appears to have erased my logbook with my meditation record. This is very bad. An update should never destroy user data without offering a wait to back it up.

Do not update the app

Aksh_rz on

United States

The logbook and daily practice has disappeared and so has the entire data of your sittings. Upon contacting the team they recommend going to settings and enabling logbook a function which isn’t even available. Years if my data was wiped out.

Live virtual courses

1stUse on

United States

It would be incredibly helpful if live virtual courses can be incorporated into this app from different centers around the world. My understanding is there is a daily virtual sitting (eastern time based) which requires dialing in and various zoom sittings run by different centers around the world. Why not put them all on the app so we can see who is having a virtual sitting now, in what language, etc. It could be similar to Live events on Insight Timer (without the UI being as distracting as on Insight).

Love this app

Great app, love that it helps me keep in touch with my practice during COVID... a big thank you to the wonderful Dhamma volunteers building this tool. Are apple health integration, watch integration, or dark mode on the road map?

Truly amazing for old students!

Thank you for making this wonderful app. It is so intuitive and has everything we need. The new self-course feature given current 2020 situation is wonderful.

Valuable support for your practice

BurgerShack on

United States

This app has everything you need: daily reminders, a variety of recordings, including long instructions, discourses, links to virtual sits around the world, links to centers and course registration, downloadable recordings of talks by Goenka-ji, etc. There is even a 10-15 minute Anapana recording to play for your curious family or roommates. One of the most useful features for me is the logbook, which tracks every sit you do through this app, including duration. It's very encouraging to see consistent progress. Do note that virtual sits open in Zoom and therefore are not logged by the program. I really appreciate the thoughtful design of this app and how quickly the team updated it for covid-times. It is lean and elegant yet highly customizable. There are no distracting graphics and no social component, either - fantastic. Just sit. One thing I would love to see is some sort of widget to keep my practice at the forefront of my mind every time I use my phone. For now, I keep it on my home screen to keep my practice high priority. It is the most important app in my library. Much metta to the developers and to all my dhamma family! May you grow in your practice. May you be happy, peaceful, and liberated!

I love it, wish there was an Apple Watch version.

Great app. The only challenge for me is having to use my phone in order to use it, which is a major source of distraction for me. I think it would be great if the recordings could be extended to watchOS, too!
