Indego Bike Share

Personally, I prefer to get some exercise using an unpowered bike. But electric bikes are the majority of bikes available.

I rented one bike once, and never again. When I returned it, the bike locked into the dock but the timer kept running. I sent photos to customer support, and eventually heard back that I needed to send a photo of the bike number. So I went back for that, and the next day I got $9 added to my charge with fees. Turns out that’s for using an e-bike… which was definitely unclear when first setting up the app. $14 for 30 minutes of an e bike is crazy.

We’ve been using Indego for just over a year and it is really getting worse as time goes on. Bikes are often broken, locked, dead battery, or hard to find. Randomly they close and move a station that we’ve been using regularly, and the next closest is 5-8 blocks away, in center city! Ucity never has bikes after 6pm, literally 8 stops and no bikes. Randomly some mornings the entire station will be empty at 8am. I thought the quality would improve, but it feels like they are cutting corners now that they have subscriptions. The bikes are too heavy/clunky to ride without the electric boost, so they really should have them more often and fully charged. Sometimes the app shows more battery life when the bike is actually out of power.

A rip off. The app would NOT let me or my family members register at the day rate of 15+$. So we ended up registering at the hourly rate of four something. There were mostly e bikes on the stand so we got three ebikes and two regular. On return less that two hours later our charge wasn’t eight or nine something, it was over 77$, per bike. In the message section was a notice after we registered and got bikes that additional rates could apply to ebikes. Totally evil - especially after having an excellent experience with DC bike share, the day before.

First ride. Double billed. What’s up?

The process to rent the bikes was smooth and we felt the guest pass for 60 minute unlimited rides all day was reasonable for $15, but they don’t make it known that using an electric-assisted bike will be an extra 20 cents per minute of riding. A $15 dollar excursion turned into an unexpected $40 dollar excursion. Slimey and scummy practice.

Love the bike system, and it’s very useful without many issues. I wish there were fewer electric bikes relative to the number of normal ones- sometimes there are only 10 electric bikes at a station and no normal ones, and I don’t want to pay the additional fee required to use an electric one.

I really love Indego when it is working. It is my primary form of transportation to and from work, and all around Philly. However, the app is extremely inconsistent with bugs. I was unable to use the app for all of 7/28, which caused me to miss a train, and walk/uber long distances. I would happily pay more for the service if it was consistent.

Unless you live around there and use it often its honestly cheaper to uber by the time you purchase the membership and all the additional fees.
