The Old English language is at once recognisable and unfamiliar: many words resemble ones that are used today, but their meanings are not always the same, and they can take many more forms than in the modern language. Liberation Philology Old English helps you master these complexities by practice.

Wherever you have your phone handy, it is ready to drill you on Old English vocabulary and grammar with a continuous multiple-choice test. Your answers are immediately confirmed or corrected, and reinforced through repetition.

• Vocabulary: 150 levels of general vocabulary, each testing the translation of 10 words between modern and Old English. A further 330 levels cover the vocabulary of Beowulf in approximate sequence. Interspersed among these are cumulative levels reviewing what has been learned earlier (giving a total of 542 levels).

• Nouns: Tests your ability to parse and decline all classes of Old English nouns.

• Verbs: Tests your ability to parse and conjugate a full range of weak, strong, and irregular verbs in Old English.

A further Reference module allows you to review the vocabulary word-list and the noun and verb paradigms.

great practice!

really great practice for medieval language students! there is so much vocab, and it really helps if you find word endings difficult for the cases (which I do lol)

A tool for memorising Old English. Fabulous value for money.

Useful but basic

If this app was free then without doubt I would award it five stars. However the app is somewhat too basic to constitute its price

Highly effective

Really great app for what is obviously a fringe language - comparatively at least. A great modern technology tool to liven up learning a language which is served by some very dry and methodical approaches. If you know any students of old English, or anyone simply wishing to expand their list of languages, tell then to buy this extremely reasonably-priced app.

Extremely useful

Really appreciate whomever made this app. It's obviously meets quite a niche need, but this makes it all the more valuable. It's a simple design, but works really well and has a surprisingly large vocabulary to keep you busy. I use a new level every day to improve my vocabulary. Highly recommend this app to any medieval lit students as an easy way into the language.

Best Old English App for intermediate students

A flexible and comprehensive application for all lovers of the old tongue. Although perhaps best suited to those already familiar with Old English basics like verb classes and tenses, the difficulty of the tests can be adjusted to suit your own level and stretch the brain in ways text books just can't manage. Highly recommended.
