Level up your training with Metric VBT, the only app you need for bar speed tracking, bar path, velocity based training (VBT) and now a full workout builder.
Log all your exercises, sets, reps and RPE values in the gym and thanks to the Metric VBT patented barbell velocity tracking algorithm use the camera on your iPhone/iPad to accurately track the velocity, tempo and range of motion for all your barbell lifts — No hardware or VBT devices required!
Why Train with Metric VBT?
Metric is the complete training log solution, not just for strength and conditioning coaches, powerlifters, athletes, and dedicated lifters, but for anyone looking to fully understand and optimize their workout performance.
With velocity tracking on 60+ exercises, 100+ manual exercises in the app library and the ability to create your own custom lifts, Metric is a complete weight lifting and strength training app. Helping lifters track their progress, stay motivated, and maximize gains.
Key Features:
- NEW Estimated 1RM: Automatically measure and track progress on the one rep max of all your lifts every single session. Thanks to velocity based training - a proven and reliable way to accurately predict your 1RM from regular training with just velocity and load information
- Workout Templates: Build and save your workout templates in advance, drastically improving the efficiency of logging your workouts. Record your velocity tracked lifts and manually enter your other lifts to log and plan your entire workout in one app.
- Precise bar speed tracking: Externally validated for accuracy, Metric delivers velocity, fatigue, tempo, power & ROM data without the need for additional hardware.
- Real-time feedback: Get audible alerts during your sets as you hit or miss velocity targets or fall below your velocity loss thresholds.
- Effortless velocity tracking: Quick setup, zero hardware issues, and more time focusing on your lifts. Just point and shoot.
- HD Video Recording & sharing: Deep dive into your technique and performance with HD video that you can easily save video in app, share with your coach, or export to your camera roll.
- Bar Path Tracking: Get a detailed bar path trace for every rep, allowing you to easily analyse technique.
- Progress insights: Stay motivated and track performance with velocity trends. Provides you with a snapshot of progress on strength, power and bar speed over time, crucial for assessing real-time fatigue levels and long-term performance gains.
You can download and use Metric for free, or subscribe in-app to a Pro or Teams account and get advanced features and training analytics.
How to record velocity with Metric:
Using Metric to record your velocity in the gym is straightforward. Start a workout, select your exercise, enter the weight and open the camera. Position your phone side-on to the barbell and frame the video to capture your entire set within the video frame. Press record and complete your reps, when finished, your data is ready as soon as you hit stop.

Questioning The Accuracy of Measured Velocity
It seems a bit inconsistent from where the timer starts for the movement and stops for the movement, across different sets of the same exercise. On one occasion, it had been way off in tracking the bar path, evidenced by the line it displayed that went in the complete opposite of the bar path. Additionally, some times don’t logically match with the load/intensity I used (i.e. set 1 of 405 lbs deadlift measured 0.55 m/s while set 2 of 455 lbs measured 0.52 m/s while set 3 of 405 lbs measured 0.57 m/s, with standardized rest times). The concept of the app is great, but I don’t feel like I can trust the measured data.
awesome
only one minor bug, sometimes the bar path feature doesn’t recognize the bar. Otherwise, this app is stellar for tracking velocity of the bar!
Great app
Probably one of the best Vbt trackers out there that doesn’t require any additional equipment

Good but significant bugs
Will consistently miss sets after I hit record. When it works it’s great but will just not record sometimes.
Affiliate link
Hi my name is Tytan Hinkson and I would like to talk about an affiliate link where I would promote you on all my socials. Is there an email that I can talk to you with.
Thankyou
LOVE IT!
Great addition to my training program for my athletes. They love it!!
Metric VBT
This app is lousy. It stops working every few days
Enjoyed using the app
It works pretty well, but it would be nice if they could integrate the Apple Watch and LiDAR that are part of the iPhone Pro line. The Apple Watch is a point of contact with a built-in accelerometer, which is closer to the bar and the LiDAR to get actual distance and more accurate reading of velocity with the camera. The app does an okay job, but the measurements are a bit off. The integration of allowing coaches to see their athletes' data is incredible, but with other devices, it is Standard practice. I can put a device that attaches to the barbell for 500 dollars, comes with a companion app, and it’s way more accurate. The downside of those devices is that they require an iPad and a mat for the laser to reflect on. I also can’t have the athlete use it at their will. They need to either own the device or have it on hand, But if you think about it, an iPhone Pro 12 can be found for less than that and an Apple Watch. There are over devices that run a couple of grand that, again, if you think about it, between your newest watch and iPhone, you're already in about that price point. It’s a great concept I hope they can expand on the accuracy and use available hardware instead of focusing on stop gap measures like giving me a notification that “I’m improving”.
Hoping for data importation
Would be a 5 star review but was hoping to be able to import data from other vbt sources like velocity metics from my Beast Sensor or even the sensor itself to calculate everything.
