Octopus for Tourists Reviews
This app has failed and needs to correct these issues:
- American Express NEEDS to be added, Hong Kong had American Express issues at atms and this house mandatory to have in the octopus card.
-Fx fees should be priced competitive and not overcharge.
Ripoff
They charge you in your own currency and use an exorbitant foreign exchange rate. I can get HK dollars at the spot rate through a credit card or even a prepaid card. One can’t use the normal octopus card without a HK booking address. They also charge a 50hkd fee to use the card. When you refund it, they will take some of the FX difference away from you again no less. A scam. Suica in Japan is how it should work - no fee and they let you use any card.
WASTE OF TIME
Transactions won’t go through after the first one. And it is finicky at best… horrible app in general
Can’t top up consistently
Incredibly frustrating app. Sometimes my card to top up works, other times it is denied. I have 3 different credit cards. It is the same for all of them. I spoke with each bank and it is on the merchant end. For example today I topped up with my Mastercard and then to test it, and hour later I tried again and the card was denied. Better to get the physical card and go through the hassle of topping up with cash at the convenience store or MTR!!!!
FX transaction cost
This app forced us to use other currencies other than HKD. And it charged over 3% on top. I have a credit card that is 0% fx fee, and wanted to pay by HKD, but there isnt such option. It is a scam.
Do not download this app.
Unusable. You can’t top it up regardless of what this app or website says. You can’t top it up via the app, it gives you a service error. You can’t top it up via apple wallet either, even though they say that’s how you do it. Buy a physical card and take out cash, I’m not the only one with these problems, they’re all over the internet. Save yourself the hassle and headache and just go to a bank or atm
Took my money and didn’t add any card
Added money through Apple Pay. It keeps failing to add card with error message. Now restarting the app and I have to pay again.
Do NOT use - get a physical card
This app was very poor and added a lot of stress. It generally worked in the subway stations but it rarely worked properly on buses and trams. It took numerous attempts to get it to scan while a growing number of angry Hong Kongers queued up behind. It was also hit or miss whether it worked for buying at stores at all
Top up malfunctioning after app updates
I can’t top up the app with my Apple Pay after the most recent app updates. I called the customer service hotline but there’s no route to get a real agent picking up and solving my issue. Please help!
almost ideal
works great, i just added it to apple wallet and use tap everywhere. the only downside is that u have to have hong kong issued credit card to be able to top up in HKD. i have Wise card with HKD but i cannot use it to top up. as result, i’m using Apple Pay with canadian card and top up in CAD and loosing money on exchange fee.
