Shot Designer was developed by Per Holmes, the creator of the renowned Hollywood Camera Work training, and has been developed in conjunction with major TV and Film productions.
Shot Designer is based on the realization that neither Camera Diagrams, Shot Lists, or Storyboards by themselves give you a satisfying understanding of camera-blocking -- you have to use them *together*.
Shot Designer is FAST. The app knows how Directing works and automatically does most of the work for you. Cameras rearrange themselves when you move characters. Good but stagnant
This is a very good tool especially when it released 10 years ago.
There isn’t another specialised tool for lighting plans that I know of, but it is incredibly limited.
It feels like it is a bata not a full priced finished tool.
It needs lots of work and expanded features.
The core of this is extremely strong, but in its current state it could easily be replaced by a competitor with just a few more features.
Don’t get it unless you’re working in film and don’t already have a method to making lighting plans. It’s for people who are new to lighting plans or need a simple quick basic way to make a basic plan
Always crashing
Paid for the pro version and very dissatisfied.
This app worked well for the first year but now in 2022 it crashes all the time and is virtually unusable.

It’s clear symbols and simple interface mean making animated blocking diagrams quick, easy and can be understood by anyone. It makes my communication more clear onset.
Mediocre
Was very disappointed to find that you have to upgrade to Pro to simply save a file. The app is a bit confusing as the finger actions to carry out functions are very specific. I can see how it could be useful for planning shots, but for now I will stick to pen and paper to draw things out by hand.
Fast and helpful
Works well for planning and for noting down blocking and camera moves on the fly. A real joy - and quick enough it doesn't get in the way. Like being able to import maps and floor plans, wish it didn't misunderstand what I'm clicking occasionally, but otherwise very useful! Love it.
Amazing app, really useful!
Easy to use and get to grips with and the results are perfect for directing lighting set ups to other crew members. Sometimes it can be hard to click on certain objects when they are close by each other and can be frustrating but apart from that, no complaints!!
First Feature film resource
In July 2013 I shot my first feature film, SUPERBOB, and I used Shot Designer every day. It was probably the single piece of (non camera) technology I simply couldn't have done without.

I direct Dexter, House, Walking Dead and have used it on all of them. Wish it would automatically save, but otherwise great!
Just Perfect
This app has revolutionised the way I work on set.
So quick and easy to use I have even been able to block scenes on the fly using this app. The ability to seamlessly integrate between laptop and iOS awesome. Love it.
