Synology Photos FAQ
Is Synology Photos free?
Yes, Synology Photos is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is Synology Photos legit?
🤔 The Synology Photos app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
First back up was plagued with constant crashes but now Live Photos do not display correctly. They display as a photo and video instead of a Live Photo as they previously have done. Please fix, renders the app useless and unusable. Will be switching all my Synology gear over to QNAP.
Photo backup
The app is a great way to backup your large photo library to your NAS. I prefer to own my data and not have to upload them to the cloud
Fails at the basics: no proper offline, no manual ordering.
This app fails at the basics. You can't rearrange photos in albums, and there's no option to keep albums offline—only a cache that relies on manual viewing while on your LAN, which is ridiculous.
How am I supposed to know in advance which photos I’ll want to access later? It’s unacceptable to have to click each photo just to make sure they cache properly.
I refuse to connect my NAS to the internet. The rearranging options are limited to sorting by date or file name, and you can’t rename photos, rendering albums pointless.
The app doesn’t even back up albums from the Apple Photos app, resulting in a chaotic backup experience too. I don’t even mind that since I was happy to recreate Albums here, but I can’t actually re-arrange the photos at all!
Overall, it's poorly designed and practically useless.
Features needed.
Need to be able to drag/drop to custom reorder albums and *folders*. Do this with a sort file which maintains the order on a permanent basis. Needs duplicate checking. Exact duplicates, and some kind of image analysis for % similarity. It's amazing how they can have albums created based on object recognition, but not have some basic organising features.
Also the app desperately needs Split View support for iPad.
Ver. 2.0 is rubbish
Do no update to ver 2.0 it’s complete rubbish. It will backup everything all over again, if you try to delete from personal space it’ll try and delete from your device as well.
Merci pour la mise à jour
Merci pour cette mise à jour, on respire enfin.
Mais on reste loin des standards actuels…
Great App but could be better!
Can we please support multiple accounts?
Like switching between accounts without re-login.
Also ability to Hide certain photos/albums/folders.
No Editing Feature whatsoever!
The app works quite well for storing photos and videos. As a photographer I mean issue with this app is that there is no editing facilities whatsoever if that timer to rotate the image. And what makes it worse is it if you edit the image before uploading to synergy photos and then you’ll be edit that same image you’re stuck with the original image uploaded in other words. No changes are made to the image uploaded in Synology Photos app. It’s quite frustrating as every other image app allows even basic edits. Come on Synology! When will you be fixing this problem? I Don’t want to be forced to stop using it and having to find another solution! Pleas give us a update and timeline on this..
Still a long way to go
Its great that it can back up iPhone photos to physical NAS drive and is able to transfer high res photos are in stored iCloud but that’s about it. The search function is poor, backing up is not only restricted to having the app open but you actually have to be in the app to have it continue backing up, always gets stuck on large files and constant disabling and enabling is required to get it to work. Won’t be canceling iCloud anytime soon which was the aim of purchasing a NAS. There is potential so hopefully it gets there in the future.
Rubbish App
When you launch a new application you’d expect the new app should be at least of equal quality to the old one (Moments). This one screwed up all photo timelines, timestamp and etc. In hindsight, I regret of using the Synology app and put too much trust on the dev team. Too Naive of me!
